Inside Kat Dennings & Tim Allen’s New Sitcom—Why Fans Are Buzzing!

Working with Tim Allen nowadays comes with some bad optics. He’s an open conservative in Hollywood, alongside guys like Dennis Quaid and Zachary Levi. Not to mention, his use of the n-word in a past interview. Clearly, this isn’t the Home Improvement star or the Buzz Lightyear we all knew from back in the day. However, nowadays, he’s back with a new sitcom Shifting Gears that just aired its season finale. Now, his leading co-star Kat Dennings dishes on what it’s like working with him.

Recently, Dennings spoke with Deadline after the season finale of Shifting Gears. There, she talks about working with Tim Allen, her thoughts on the show, and being back in the sitcom space herself. Despite the bad press around him, she notes that Allen has been great to everyone on set. “I had no idea what I was walking into because you also just never know how people really are. But I was so pleasantly surprised with his behavior toward me,” Kat explains. “He’s been so open and caring and just very accepting, and he really wants this to feel good for everyone.”

Elsewhere in the interview, they address the obvious with Tim Allen and the show. Given his involvement and the general tone of Shifting Gears, Wall Street Journal argued that it’s a ‘red state show,’ or TV that’s coded to conservatives specifically. Kat doesn’t really agree with that in a vacuum. Instead, she highlights that the difference between her character and his is what makes the show tick. “No, I wouldn’t agree with that. I can understand why because there’s a conservative viewpoint from Tim’s character” Dennings says.

“But I think the fun of the show is the dynamic between Tim’s character and my character because they have completely opposing viewpoints. It’s about how they navigate that in their relationship. That’s kind of where the core of the comedy comes from,” Kat adds. “There are some little jokes here and there. As you said, it’s kind of a timely situation because there is always a family member or a family with opposing viewpoints. When you love someone, that can be a very difficult dynamic.”
