‘I’d Have Broken Up With Him Immediately’: Kristen Stewart Addresses Bella and Edward’s Twilight Relationship

Kristen Stewart played Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga, but she has a new perspective on Bella’s relationship with Edward.

Bella and Edward have one of the most famous relationships in pop culture, even if their romance has inspired multiple jokes and memes. Bella is a career-defining role for Kristen Stewart, and, speaking during her interview on the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, the actor also addressed their romance. It turns out, she’s not Edward’s biggest fan.

The Twilight Saga follows Bella, a 17-year-old who moves from Arizona to a small town named Forks to live with her father. There, she meets the charming Edward, who turns out to be a vampire. The five films follow their impossible relationship, which culminates with Bella being turned into a vampire after giving birth to their child, Reneesme.

Podcast host Amanda Hirsch was the first to address her role. “Let’s talk about Bella for a second. Do we not like her in retrospect?” It didn’t take long for Stewart to defend her character. “Do we not like her? Whoa. Hey, you better be careful. I don’t know if you can tell who you’re talking to right now.”

As Hirsch made a case that Bella’s entire life rotated around Edward, Stewart had a better explanation. “Yeah, but, he was trying to sort of control whether or not she made choices for herself,” Stewart countered. “I would have broken up with him immediately.” She continued, “I mean, if I was like, ‘Hey, I want to try that,’ and he was like, ‘No, this is just for me,’ I would be like, ‘Well, this is also just for me. My whole life. Without you.’”

“I get the sort of protection thing, but you gotta let a girl make her own choices,” Stewart concluded. Stewart was referring to Bella asking Edward to turn her into a vampire, which Edward refused various times.

The Twilight Saga Is Being Turned Into an Animated Series

Starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, The Twilight Saga is a hugely profitable series. Throughout its five films, the films grossed over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office (via The Numbers). The first film premiered in 2008, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 concluding the franchise in 2012. However, despite the franchise ending over a decade ago, the universe is still thriving. Similar to the Harry Potter franchise, Lionsgate decided to reboot the Twilight universe.

The Twilight reboot series got a recent update from Lionsgate, and it revealed an exciting change: it would become an animated series. The series has received a lot of criticism over the years, and the animated version has the opportunity to fix some of its flaws.

So far, there aren’t many details available for the upcoming Twilight reboot, but it will be based on Stephenie Meyer’s series of the same name, which consists of four books.
