Iain Armitage Breaks Silence On Sheldon’s Absence In Georgie & Mandy’s Sequel Despite Cooper Returns: “They Don’t Even Need Me”

As Mary, Missy, and Meemaw will appear in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Iain Armitage breaks his silence on Sheldon’s absence in the show. The end of Sheldon’s childhood in Texas was the primary reason for Young Sheldon wrapping up despite still being very popular. Admittedly, there has been pushback on the decision to pull the plug on the family comedy/drama, although it was out of CBS’ hands. Instead, the writers chose to stick to The Big Bang Theory‘s established timeline. Despite that, the franchise will thrive via Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

Technically, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is Young Sheldon‘s continuation, but it won’t focus on Sheldon, something that Armitage doesn’t have any issues with, as he reveals to ET. Despite bringing back the rest of the Cooper-based Texas, the new show doesn’t have any confirmed return for the boy genius — at least for now. Instead, Armitage is nothing but supportive of the endeavor. Read his full quote below:

Always. They are incredible. At the end of the day, Montana is such a good guy — I love him to death. As you got to see, polite as heck. He’s awesome. And then miss Emily Osment, so talented, gorgeous, amazing, incredible, smart, wonderful. I cannot wait to see what they do on their show.

They don’t even need me stepping in and intruding. I can’t wait to see what they do. But I would love to step in for an episode.

Why It’s Trickier To Bring Sheldon Back In Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage

Sheldon Is No Longer Based In Texas

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage picks up only a couple of months after George’s death in the Young Sheldon season 7 penultimate episode. This means that there won’t be that much separation between the shows, making it tricky to explain the changes in storytelling for the new series. For context, instead of a single-camera format, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage will be filmed in front of a live studio audience, which means that there will be a laugh track. Beyond that, however, the challenge is to justify the Coopers’ limited involvement when Georgie and Mandy only live across town.

This is what Mary, Missy, and Meemaw’s replacement will likely address. Despite only appearing in the first two episodes of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, at least their returns are already confirmed. Things are a bit more difficult with Sheldon, however. Since the boy genius already moved to California in the Young Sheldon finale, Armitage’s next appearance needs a specific storyline. It must also line up with his academic schedule at Caltech. This means that there are only a few storytelling options to bring him back. Despite this, at least there’s a conscious effort by the producers to feature him again.

Mary, Missy, and Meemaw will all return for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, but the manner of their comeback is disrespectful to Young Sheldon.

Ultimately, there’s no doubt that Armitage will eventually find his way to Sheldon’s shoes in CBS’ Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. While The Big Bang Theory franchise evolves beyond the socially-inept Sheldon, there’s no denying that he remains the poster child of the universe. It would be a mistake never to feature him again in any of the expansion shows.
