“I Thought I Lost Him”—The Day Gordon Ramsay’s Son Almost Drowned On Set

Gordon Ramsay’s shows often bring drama—but one terrifying incident behind the scenes had nothing to do with cooking. During a break in filming Uncharted in Costa Rica, Ramsay’s young son, Oscar, was nearly swept out to sea.

The crew had wrapped a morning shoot near the shoreline, and Ramsay’s family had joined him for a quick lunch break. Oscar, just 3 years old at the time, was playing near the water with a local guide when a rogue wave crashed ashore—dragging the toddler off his feet.

“I turned and saw him disappear,” Ramsay later said, visibly shaken. “It was the most helpless I’ve ever felt in my life.”

Without thinking, Ramsay sprinted into the surf, diving into the waves as crew members screamed. A camera assistant dropped his gear and followed.

Oscar was caught in the tide, drifting dangerously toward the rocks. Ramsay reached him seconds before the wave would’ve pulled him under again. Both father and son were battered and drenched—but alive.

Production was shut down for the day. Ramsay, usually unflappable, broke down in his trailer.

No footage of the incident was ever released, but the story has become legend among crew members. “It changed him,” one producer said. “After that, he stopped filming without knowing where his kids were.”

To this day, Ramsay says it was the closest he’s ever come to tragedy. “I’ve faced fires, sharks, and angry chefs—but nothing scared me like that wave.”
