9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman has carefully commented on theories that Eddie is leaving the show, addressing what his future in the procedural drama looks like. 9-1-1 season 8 has laid out a difficult road for the firefighter and paramedic, with his son, Christopher (Gavin McHugh) relocating to Texas with his grandparents after a falling out. In season 8’s mid-season finale, Eddie confirmed to Buck (Oliver Stark) that he’s thinking of moving to El Paso to be closer to his son, hoping to repair their relationship, even if it means starting a whole new life.
Speaking with Forbes, Guzman carefully acknowledged Eddie’s unclear future in 9-1-1, explaining that he sees himself in the role for the foreseeable future. However, he did say that, if his story were to end abruptly in the near future, he would be satisfied with having brought the character to life. Check out what Guzman had to say about Eddie’s future below:
I love the character so much and it’s been a pleasure playing the character for so long, that I could see myself playing for a bit longer. However, if I woke up tomorrow and the character was no longer available to play, I would feel solid in the fact that I did my due diligence with him.
What Guzman’s Statement Means For Eddie’s Future In 9-1-1
Will Season 8 Really See Him Leave The Team?
Eddie has been an integral part of the team since he was introduced in season 2, very quickly becoming Buck’s friend and frequent partner over the years. However, his conflict with Christopher at the end of 9-1-1 season 7 hasn’t been resolved, with the firefighter spending much of his time feeling regret for developing an emotional connection with Kim (Devin Kelley). While he also lost Marisol (Edy Ganem) because of his actions, his biggest regret is driving his son away, influencing his consideration to try and make amends in person.
Since season 8’s latest episode ended with a cliffhanger about what he’ll actually do, his actual decision probably won’t be revealed until the mid-season premiere. While Guzman’s statement makes it sound like he could be playing Eddie for quite some time, potentially even into 9-1-1 season 9 if it gets renewed, he’s also open to the idea of his story coming to a close. This makes it less likely he’ll actually be departing the show this season, but it does mean his farewell remains a very realistic possibility.
Our Take On Eddie’s Potential Departure From 9-1-1 In Season 8
It Doesn’t Seem Likely For 1 Major Reason
Eddie’s story in 9-1-1 season 8 focused on how he wants to repair his relationship with Christopher, prompting his decision to leave. However, his journey has also shown how it can’t just happen overnight if he goes to Texas, meaning if he did go, it would leave his story unresolved. This makes it unlikely he’s going to be leaving the show, as it would negate the focus of his storyline. Instead, this appears to be one more stepping stone in his arc, which the show is likely to feature no matter his location.
