Seems like fans can be at ease about Kevin Costner’s character’s fate in ‘Yellowstone’.
Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner have long been reported to be butting heads over Costner’s incredibly messy exit from the Yellowstone saga to focus on his own respective projects. Even as the latest statements from them praising each other hint that there isn’t quite as much beef between them as the rumors held, nothing can be known for sure.
But while that’s that, it seems like even if there is some bad blood between them, Sheridan doesn’t seem to want to take it out on Costner’s respective character in the saga by insulting him with his character John Dutton’s fate after his exit from the series.
Taylor Sheridan Won’t Insult Kevin Costner’s Character After His Exit
Ever since news broke out that Kevin Costner won’t be embodying the iconic character of John Dutton anymore and that Yellowstone would be facing its abrupt end with the second part of season 5, fans have been going crazy with worry about what would happen to the head of the Dutton family.
However, it seems like they don’t need to worry too much, because, as opposed to what the Dances with Wolves star suggested be the end of his character, mastermind co-creator and showrunner Sheridan doesn’t seem to think along the same lines.
If anything, he seems to be pretty opposed to even the idea of insulting a character’s fate that way just because the respective actor has to leave. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed the same as he said:
“I don’t do f—k-you car crashes. Whether [Dutton’s fate] inflates [Costner’s] ego or insults is collateral damage that I don’t factor in with regard to storytelling.”
That said, irrespective of whatever bad blood might exist between them due to Costner’s messy exit, fans need to be worry-free about losing one of their favorite Duttons through an ill-fated death like that, thanks to Taylor Sheridan‘s point of view.
Moreover, as it turns out, this perspective stems from Sheridan’s own personal experiences.
Taylor Sheridan Won’t Treat John Dutton the Way His Character was Treated
Surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly) enough, this respectable decision from the 54-year-old cowboy comes after his character himself had to go through a similar fate when he decided to leave a series — just like Costner.
For those unversed, this happened in the superhit series Sons of Anarchy, where Sheridan played the role of the antagonist Deputy Chief David Hale for 21 episodes (and did a stunning job at that). But when he decided to leave, Hale was seen getting brutally run over by a van.
During the same interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 1883 creator pointed out the same when presented with the suggestion to kill off Costner’s character the same way, saying:
“I was killed in a f—k-you car crash!”
Needless to say, that must have been an unpleasant and incredibly insulting experience to go through for Taylor Sheridan, especially after the splendid way he contributed to the saga.
Plus, this must have also allowed him to think through Costner’s point of view while deciding a fate for his character, considering how the actor himself dedicated somewhere around half a decade to his fan-favorite character John Dutton, irrespective of any beef existing between them (if any).
But until it does get revealed how the eldest Dutton’s fate unveils in the saga, you can stream Yellowstone on Peacock.
