“I Didn’t Even Get A Callback”: Jennifer Lawrence’s Twilight Audition Was Rejected “Immediately”
Jennifer Lawrence reveals missing out on a role in Twilight and how she was surprisingly rejected immediately without so much as a callback.
Jennifer Lawrence recalls being immediately rejected when auditioning for a role in Twilight. The first Twilight movie premiered in 2008, meaning that Lawrence hadn’t quite had her breakthrough as an actress at the time she auditioned. Lawrence got her start in Hollywood guest starring on such shows as Monk, Cold Case, and Medium before landing her breakthrough role in Winter’s Bone.
On an episode of The Rewatchables podcast, Lawrence opened up about losing out on a role in Twilight. The Oscar winner recalls the challenges of being a “run-of-the-mill actor” in her younger years and how that affects her chances in auditioning for the vampire novel adaptation, though holds no ill will about being passed on it in the years since. See what Lawrence shared below:
I auditioned for Twilight [and] they turned me down immediately. [Laughs] I didn’t even get a callback. But my life would’ve been completely different. I got Hunger Games I think, like, a year later. When you audition when you’re a run-of-the-mill actor… you just get five pages and they’re like, ‘Act monkey.’ When it came out, I was like, ‘Hot damn.’
Where Jennifer Lawrence’s Career Is At Now
Lawrence’s story of her Twilight audition is a reminder of all the different stages actors go through in Hollywood. Like most actors, Lawrence’s breakthrough into the movie industry wasn’t immediate or dramatic. Instead, she faced a few disappointments while finding her footing, including missing out on both Twilight and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. While she has since found high success in the industry, the most recent stage she has entered in her career is a resurgence.
While Lawrence’s career picked up speed in 2010, she did experience some bumps in the late 2010s. During this period, she starred in several blockbusters, including X-Men: Apocalypse, Passengers, and Dark Phoenix, though many suffered from poor box office performances and critical reception. After Dark Phoenix’s infamous flop in 2019, Lawrence briefly disappeared from the Hollywood scene, choosing not to return to acting until she appeared in Netflix’s 2021 movie, Don’t Look Up. Lawrence has since opened up about her hiatus, explaining her dissatisfaction with the quality of films she was starring in and the feeling that everyone was “sick” of her.
Despite these emotional hurdles, Lawrence’s return has been on a steady start, with Don’t Look Up becoming one of Netflix’s most-watched films and garnering four Academy Award nominations. She went on to star in the well-received Causeways and, most recently, she showed off her comedic talents in the new movie No Hard Feelings, which has scored positive reviews. Despite hiatuses and a rejection from Twilight, Lawrence has managed to maintain an impressive career and is still riding high on the waves of her comeback.
