How Chicago Fire’s ‘Ghosts’ Season 13 Will Make Severide ‘Juicy’ Contains general spoilers for ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 13
In a few weeks, ‘Chicago Fire’ will return to the airwaves for a new season, and the showrunners have begun to let fans know what changes will come after the Season 12 finale’s big bombshell about Kelly Severide’s (Jesse Spencer) relationship with newcomer Jack Damon (Michael Bradway). In short, Damon revealed that they were half-brothers through their abusive late best friend, Benny (Treat Williams), and Kelly walked away in shock.
The fact that Benny reappears just as Kelly is getting his bearings after returning to the fire department from his ATF job and just as he and Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) are starting to think about parenthood (which could be a big mistake) hasn’t gone unnoticed by showrunner Andrea Newman. “It just feels like this is a haunted season 13,” she told Entertainment Weekly ahead of the season 13 premiere. “It’s like the ghosts of everyone’s past are coming back. That’s very true for Severide, because he’s worked so hard to forget his dad and become his own firefighter. So all of a sudden, having Benny’s son, his half-brother, pop into his life, makes him rediscover all of that. So it opens up a lot for Severide and that relationship is complicated and fascinating and there’s a lot going on between the two of them from the get-go.”
It looks like fans can expect some “gritty” family drama instead of the brotherly love between the Severide siblings. But this isn’t the first time Kelly has had to deal with the sudden appearance of a previously unknown half-sibling.
Longtime fans of “Chicago Fire” will remember that Kelly Severide has another half-sibling. Katie Nolan (Brittany Curran) is another child of Benny Severide, and when Kelly meets her in Season 2, things are initially rocky between them. Katie is a chef who also has her own scars from being raised by Benny, which means she initially doesn’t want to get close to Kelly. However, the siblings eventually find common ground.
More than just agreeing to get along, Kelly and Katie have become quite close. He even attended her culinary school graduation and introduced her to each other at the fire station. She and Otis (Yuriy Sardarov) dated for a while, but when Vince Keeler (Jake Weary) kidnapped her, she decided it was best to start over in another city. Katie reappeared when Benny died in Season 7, and Kelly took the opportunity to introduce her to Stella. She and Otis talked about old times together, suggesting that they’ve remained friends since she left town. She’s currently working in Colorado as a sous chef and wasn’t back in town for Kelly and Stella’s wedding or Otis’s funeral. Time will tell whether we’ll ever see all three Severides in the same place at the same time, but Kelly will certainly be no stranger to half-sibling drama when “Chicago Fire” returns on September 25.
