The bad news is that Will Trent season 3 won’t premiere until early 2025, but the good news is that Netflix has the perfect series for fans to watch in the meantime. The ABC police procedural is based on the crime novel series of the same name by Karin Slaughter. As the title suggests, Will Trent centers on Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez), a special agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) with a keen eye for detail that makes him one of the best agents around. Will also grew up in a foster home, which has shaped him significantly as a person and a person who works in law enforcement. Will has had his ups and downs, with one of his worst moments coming in the finale of Will Trent season 2. The truth about his best friend, Angie, covering up the murder of her former abuser is revealed. Crystal, the new girl he was abused by, kills him, and Angie makes it look like the older woman killed him in self-defense. Returning, Will has a choice to make—he can either help Angie continue the cover-up or arrest her. Sadly, he chooses the latter. Will Trent season 2 ends with Angie in handcuffs and Will missing, and it will be a long time before viewers find out what happens next.
While fans wait for Will Trent season 3 to premiere, they can watch Pieces of Her on Netflix. The Charlotte Stoudt-created thriller is based on the 2018 book of the same name by Karin Slaughter, so the plot comes from the same author who created Will Trent. The show follows Andy Oliver, a 30-year-old woman who moves back home to care for her mother, Laura, who soon shows her daughter a side she never saw.
Pieces of Her is packed with plenty of twists reminiscent of some of Will Trent’s best twists.
Andy and Laura are caught in the middle of a shooting in a diner when the older woman is able to easily take down the attackers, catching everyone, including Andy, by surprise. As a result, Andy begins digging into Laura’s past, uncovering some of her mother’s deepest and darkest secrets. Of course, this Netflix show is similar to Will Trent in that it also adapts one of Slaughter’s novels. However, Pieces of Her is packed with plenty of twists reminiscent of some of Will Trent’s best twists. Unfortunately, Pieces of Her is only eight episodes long and is a limited series, meaning there won’t be any more episodes.
Given that Will Trent ran for two seasons and 23 episodes, while Pieces of Her only ran for eight episodes, it’s safe to say that ABC’s show has the edge over Netflix’s series. It has more material to work with and is a hit for ABC, meaning the police procedural can go on for a long time and continue to build its profile. Will Trent also has more well-developed characters, a compelling storyline, and a formula that’s perfect for network television, making it the better Karin Slaughter adaptation.
