Ghosts star Rebecca Wisocky has broken down Hetty’s emotional St. Patrick’s Day power, unpacking the importance of her experiences in the episode. Ghosts season 4, episode 16 revealed that Hetty’s (Wisocky) power is for living people to be able to see her during St. Patrick’s Day. This results in her connecting with Sunli (Asif Ali), Jay’s (Utkarsh Ambudkar) cousin, who is friendly with her at first, before realizing she’s a spirit. However, she gives a speech about being seen, a theme her and Sunli share, which slightly smooths things over before the day ends.
Speaking with TV Insider about Hetty’s powers, Wisocky explained how Ghosts season 4 revealing her character’s power gives her a wholly new dynamic after being without a power for so long. The actor explained that she liked how the theme of being seen was used with her interactions with Sunli, offering a “more childlike and open and eager” side of her that’s rare to see. Check out what Wisocky had to say below:
I was shocked when I read what the special power was going to be, but it feels very appropriate. I was frankly enjoying not having a power for 150 years because I think that that’s such a good twist to give a character who thinks of herself as such a high-status person. That was really fun for me to play. It was fun for the other ghosts to poke fun at her about that. But I love the power. I love the message of being seen. I think that it’s a theme that all of the ghosts can relate to truly feeling like they’re being known somehow after living in oblivion and purgatory for all these years. So that really resonated with me, and I love that there was a sweetness and a more feminine, romantic side that she gets to show and an innocence. I love those sides of her because she spends so much time being a persnickety, bossy stick in the mud. So when she gets to be more childlike and open and eager, I find those moments really fun.
What Hetty’s New Powers Mean For Ghosts Season 4
She Carried An Emotional Episode With Her Revelation
Out of every character in Ghosts who’s a spirit at the Bed & Breakfast, Hetty was seemingly the only one who didn’t have a special power of her own. However, this latest episode confirmed that, after acknowledging her Irish heritage, she is now visible to people once a year on St. Patrick’s Day. While it’s not as grandiose a power as Thor (Devan Chandler Long) using electricity or Sass (Román Zaragoza) going into people’s dreams, it’s still an important ability, even if it’s only limited to one day out of the whole year.
Her use of it in the episode while speaking with Sunli also emphasized the themes of her power, that being visibility and being seen by the world. The speech she gives at the end may have comedic undertones due to the way Jay’s cousin reacts, but it also shows how her power finally makes her feel seen. It’s the same way she believes her new friend will be seen by someone too, incorporating their connection into her power’s importance. Since it’s a yearly occurrence, perhaps Ghosts season 5 will have another St. Patrick’s Day special to keep Hetty’s power reoccurring.
Our Take On Hetty’s New Power In Ghosts Season 4
She Finally Feels Visible, Even If Only For A Little While
Although Hetty’s power didn’t last more than a day, she finally felt visible in a way that gave her a chance to express herself with honest emotion. It’s a big change for her character that could impact her development Ghosts moving forward, especially with the knowledge she’ll be visible to the living once a year. How this will play out in future seasons remains unclear, but it’s liable to crop up again next season given the specificity of her power.
