Chicago Fire is moving on from Chief Boden. As expected, the long-running Dick Wolf process will bring in a new person to oversee Firehouse 51 after Boden’s promotion to Deputy Chief. And while it looked for a while that whoever came in would be an interim replacement to make way for Herrmann to take over as Chief, that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. So, who is Chicago Fire’s new chief after Boden leaves?

Who is Chicago Fire’s new chief after Boden leaves?
Deadline was first to report that Dermot Mulroney, who had a breakout guest role on My Best Friend’s Wedding, had been cast as Superintendent Dom Pascal. The character is described as “a fun guy who works well under pressure and has a different leadership style than Boden.” He also said he started his career with CFD but spent the last decade as a Miami police chief and was estranged from his wife. KaDee Strickland has been cast as Monica Pascal.

Our first look at Mulroney in uniform comes from the Franklin Park Fire Department’s Instagram account, which posted two photos, one with the show’s cast and one featuring Mulroney. Other actors featured in the cast photo are Miranda Rae Mayo (Stella Kidd), Jake Lockett (Sam Carver), Joe Minoso (Joe Cruz), Hanako Greensmith (Violet Mikami), Daniel Kyri (Darren Ritter) and Randy Flagler (Capp).

Mulroney will take over the role of Chief of Police, which was left vacant after Eamon Walker left the position of Chief Boden. Boden has been promoted to Deputy Chief and is expected to appear on the series in some capacity.

Plus: Here’s When One Chicago Officially Returns When Boden left, he expressed his desire for Christopher Herrmann to follow in his footsteps as Chief, telling him that all he needed was someone who “always cares about people, listens, and always leads with his heart.” Of course, that’s logistically impossible, since Herrmann can’t just move from Lieutenant to Chief, but there’s some expectation that the series might bring in a character who could serve as an interim until Herrmann can one day become Chief. Bringing in a big name like Mulroney would change the calculus entirely.

Mulroney is no stranger to broadcast television. He’s not even a stranger to firefighter dramas, having previously starred on ABC’s Station 19. He’s also appeared in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, The Righteous Gemstones, and Arrested Development, as well as in films like Anyone But You and Scream VI.

Chicago Fire’s Season 12 finale didn’t end with anyone nearly dying, as the show usually does—but it did reveal Jack Damon as Severide’s half-brother, and left Carver’s fate at Firehouse 51 very much up in the air after he took another leave of absence after telling Violet he loved her. So there’s plenty of drama for the show to delve into beyond the new Chief when Chicago Fire returns for Season 13. Chicago Fire also stars Taylor Kinney, Miranda Rae Mayo, Joe Miñoso, Christian Stolte, Daniel Kyri, Hanako Greensmith, and Jocelyn Hudon. The show is expected to return to NBC this fall.
