Can Colter Shaw Trust Anyone Going Into Season 2 of CBS’ Tracker?
The Season 1 finale left us wondering if even Melissa Roxburgh’s Dory was hiding information from Colter regarding their deceased father, Professor Ashton Shaw — who, as we learned in Episode 11, spent years working as a government contractor before moving his family into isolation and becoming increasingly paranoid.
For two decades, Colter believed that his brother, Jensen Ackles’ Russell, had pushed Ashton to his death. After his father died, Dory went to live with Uncle Dave and Aunt Melissa, and Mary urged Russell to leave home. Since then, Mom has done nothing to dissuade Colter from believing that his brother was responsible for Ashton’s fatal fall. In fact, she insisted that Colter ignore Russell’s calls.
It wasn’t until Episode 12, when the Shaw brothers reunited for the first time since 2003, that Russell shared his truth with Colter.
“I don’t know if he fell or if someone pushed him, but I know there was someone else in the woods that night,” he said. “Dad has an enemy…. He’s a crazy asshole.
Which brings us to Episode 13. The final installment in Tracker’s first series introduces Justin Hartley’s This Is Us co-star Jennifer Morrison as family friend Lizzy Hawking. Colter helps Lizzy track down her M.I.A. daughter, and Colter and Lizzy meet for breakfast, where Lizzy serves more than just pancakes. She gives Colter new intel on Dad….
Years ago, Ashton worked with Lizzy’s mother. First they were colleagues, then they were lovers. “They had an affair… but that’s not the weirdest part,” Lizzy says. “Last year, when my mom died, I went through her stuff and it was mostly junk… but there was a box of files under her bed. Inside were all her research papers and her journals—very personal stuff. At first, I didn’t know. I knew what it was, but then I realized it was your dad’s. It was his work.”
“Why would she have something like that?” Colter asked.
“I wondered the same thing,” Lizzy replied. She recalled a newly discovered memory of Ashton visiting her mother just before he died. “My room looked out onto the driveway, and I could hear screaming one night. I looked out the window, and my mom and your dad were arguing. Then they stopped, hugged, and she brought this box into the house.”
Colter asks Lizzy if she still has the box, but she gave it to someone else… someone we all know. “I called Dory and she told me to send it to her,” Lizzy reveals. She urges Colter to let go of the past… which is exactly what Dory advised Colter to do two weeks ago, when she secretly took possession of Ashton’s box of files. Is Dory hiding something, or is she trying to protect him…?
If Colter wants to find out the truth, Lizzy suggests that he contact Mary. Alas, Colter isn’t sure he can trust Mom after what Russell told him about Dad’s death.
Meanwhile, Reenie has contacted Colter’s brother. Russell is in Argentina and invites Reenie to fly out and join him. Suffice it to say, she’s very busy right now: Not only is she secretly investigating Russell’s company—The Horizon Group, a security firm—but she’s also working on a plan to get to the bottom of the matter. The shady private eye was first mentioned in Episode 12 — and she’s in the midst of a major career change. In the finale, we learned that she’s resigned from her cozy law firm. Will she join Colter’s team full-time in Season 2?
