“Haunted Season 13”: Fallout From Chicago Fire Season 12 Cliffhanger Teaser By Showrunner
Chicago Fire’s Andrea Newman teased the fallout from Severide (Taylor Knney) and Damon’s (Michael Bradway) season 12 cliffhanger, hinting at a complicated relationship going forward. At the end of the previous episode, Chicago Fire season 12 revealed that Severide and Damon are brothers, with Benny Severide (Treat Williams) confirmed to be their father. This comes from Damon’s confession, potentially bringing back the old complicated relationship Severide had with his deceased father. It also sets the stage for what both will be grappling with in season 13. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Newman explained the fallout from Damon’s revelation to Severide that they’re brothers in Chicago Fire season 13.
The showrunner explained that the news will send the Lieutenant back into his past, causing him to explore his relationship with his father and family through a new lens. She also alluded to the events that took place between the pair in the early episodes, meaning we won’t have to wait too long to see how the news affects them. Check out what Newman had to say below: We just feel like this is a very haunting season 13. Like the ghosts of everyone’s past are coming back. That’s very true for Severide, where he’s worked very hard to forget his father and become his own firefighter. So all of a sudden Benny’s son, his half-brother, comes into his life, forcing him to rediscover all of that. So that opens up a lot of things for Severide and that relationship is very complicated and fascinating and there’s a lot going on between the two of them from the get-go.
What Severide and Damon’s Parents Mean for Chicago Fire Season 13 Severide has a complicated relationship with his father, one that’s made even more strained by his relationships with other women outside of his original marriage. This includes a revelation in season 2 where the Lieutenant learns that he has a half-sister, Katie Nolan (Brittany Curran), who he later confronts with his father. Benny passed away in season 7 from a stroke, a loss that he’s been dealing with for quite some time. Now, it looks like Chicago Fire season 13 will reopen those old wounds with the reveal of Damon.
In addition to Severide learning about his new half-brother, season 13 will also focus on Wallace Boden’s (Eamonn Walker) replacement, Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), who was introduced in the first season. This change in leadership, coupled with his now-expanding family, means the Lieutenant will have a lot of emotional baggage to deal with as the season begins. Despite this, however, it looks like he’ll be able to weather the storm, possibly with Damon as an ally who understands the difficulties the revelation may cause him.
While Severide and Damon may grow closer thanks to sharing a father, the fact that the newcomer kept the secret for so long means a wall of mistrust could build between them. However, with the latter wanting to have a real friendship with his half-brother, that wall may not last long. While it will be difficult for the protagonist to accept this new element of his past, focusing on it in Chicago Fire season 13 could help him better integrate into his newfound family.
