Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay was brought down to earth by a succinct four-word question when cooking with his mum in a humorous video making the rounds on social media.

Known for his forthright and often fiery approach, the 58-year-old culinary maestro, who first became a household name with the Channel 4 documentary miniseries Boiling Point in 1999, is renowned for his blunt critiques, sharp barbs and colourful language. The documentary which first introduced him to the British public showcased Ramsay’s relentless drive as he worked to launch his flagship restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, which has since garnered an impressive three Michelin Stars – a feat few achieve.

Despite his trademark hot temper and frequent swearing, Ramsay’s culinary prowess was gently undercut by his mother during a cooking session.

A video that has resurfaced on Reddit captures Ramsay taking a pie from the oven and setting it beside another when his mother casually asks: “Cooked in the middle?”

Ramsay echoed her question, almost in disbelief: “Is that cooked in the middle?” before using a spoon to probe the pie, only to discover it wasn’t fully baked, prompting him to exclaim: “Oh, s***. No, it’s not actually.”

His mum’s laughter led the chef to exclaim: “Oh, all right, smarta***”. He then questioned how his mother knew it wasn’t thoroughly cooked.

She informed her son that she could tell from her view that it was “sinking in the middle”, even humorously likening it to the Titanic.

The footage made its way onto Reddit, captioned: “Gordon Ramsay owned in the kitchen, by his mum”.

The uploader then added: “Imagine spending two decades mastering cooking just to get owned by your own mum.”

Reddit users were keen to share their opinions in the comments section. One user remarked: “Gordon has always had an attitude, but he knows when to back off when he is in the wrong. Solid dude [to be honest].”

Another quipped: “No matter where you are in life, your mom can always remind you she’s the real boss lol”.

A third joked: “Mama Ramsay is the only chef who could tell Gordon the chicken is undercooked.”

An additional anecdote came from someone who met the chef, saying: “I’ve met Gordon twice and he’s the biggest teddy bear of a man you could ever meet. He even remembered me the 2nd time we bumped into each other.”

They admired Ramsay’s ethos and added: “He’s passionate about getting things right and always putting a full effort into everything you can do.

“I took that attitude as inspiration.”
