Gone But Not Forgotten: Jesse Spencer Teases Matt Casey’s Future on Chicago Fire

NBC’s Chicago Fire, now in its 10th season, surprised fans with a major twist in Episode 5, titled “Two Hundred.” In a heartfelt moment, firefighter Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer), one of the original main characters, decided to leave Firehouse 51 and Chicago, relocating to Portland, Oregon, to care for two teenage boys. These boys are the sons of Casey’s best friend, Andy Darden, who tragically died in the series’ pilot episode. With their mother now in prison, Casey stepped in to fulfill the role of guardian, a choice that required a temporary, three-year absence.

For Spencer, however, the reasons for his departure from Chicago Fire are less dramatic. Having been a staple on network television for 18 consecutive years, with eight seasons on House and then ten on Chicago Fire, he felt it was simply time to take a break.

But recent comments from Spencer hint that this may not be the end of Casey’s story.

Jesse Spencer Hints at Casey’s Possible Comeback

During an interview with Deadline, Spencer shared, “It wraps up ten years for me… He’s going for three years, but is he? We don’t know.” These words suggest that while Casey may be gone for now, his absence might not be permanent.

Spencer also discussed the impact of his departure on his on-screen relationship with fellow firefighter Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), with whom his character recently entered a serious relationship. Reflecting on this dynamic, Spencer said, “I really like Kara and we’ve established a really nice relationship. I really liked working with her.” He also acknowledged the possibility of returning, saying, “There’s always a chance I’ll come back, too… Derek [Haas, the showrunner] and I talked about that, and it’s a possibility for me too.”

For now, fans can look forward to at least a voice cameo from Casey in upcoming episodes, possibly over the phone or through a Zoom call as he and Brett navigate a long-distance relationship.

Will Casey Follow in Dawson’s Footsteps?

Chicago Fire has a track record of bringing back fan-favorite characters for guest appearances. Monica Raymund, who portrayed Casey’s ex-wife Gabby Dawson, left the show after Season 6 but returned for guest appearances in Seasons 7 and 8. So, there’s precedent for Spencer’s potential return in a similar capacity.

While Chicago Fire must continue without Casey for now, his absence could be temporary, leaving fans with hope that the beloved character will one day come back to Firehouse 51.
