“Golden Bachelorette” Stars Talk Engagement, Love, and Taking Risks at Any Age

Joan Vassos, 61, made history as the first Golden Bachelorette, and in a stunning season finale, she accepted a proposal from Chock Chapple. Now, three months later, the couple is reflecting on their journey together and looking ahead to their future. The pair recently shared their experiences with AARP, revealing how their love has blossomed off-camera, and offering advice for those still searching for romance.

The Post-Engagement Transition: What’s Changed?

Since getting engaged on national television, Joan and Chock’s relationship has deepened. “We talk every day,” Joan said. But it wasn’t just about daily communication. After filming wrapped, the couple spent quality time together during a series of “Happy Couple” visits arranged by The Bachelor producers, which allowed them to bond privately in Los Angeles.

Joan explained, “We had time together to see if it was really the right thing. And I’m happy to report, it was! We fell more in love, and we had great times just being together, without the influence of the outside world.”

Chock, who was initially drawn to Joan’s intellect, shared how their shared time brought them even closer. “Joan’s competitive streak really came out, especially when we played tennis. She doesn’t like to lose!” he laughed, adding that their time together also included playing crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, simple activities that allowed them to really connect.

Joan was also impressed by Chock’s caregiving nature, something that wasn’t immediately apparent on the show. “I’ve been navigating life on my own for a while, and it can be lonely. But Chock is always there, trying to help me solve problems, whether it’s through a phone call or finding someone to help me out. It’s just so nice.”

Does the ‘Golden Bachelorette’ Work as a Dating Method?

When asked if the Golden Bachelorette experience worked better than traditional dating, Joan was clear. “Yes, I absolutely think so. The producers really get to know you and vet thousands of people to find a good match. It’s like having the world’s best dating service. They create the perfect environment where you get to know each other on these epic dates, and it’s so easy to connect.”

While the accelerated pace of the show might seem intense, Joan believes it works. “If you make a strong connection early on, that’s enough time to know if it’s the right person,” she said. For her and Chock, the process was worth it. “We did it!”

Everyday Life and Southern Gentleman Charm

Chock added some lighthearted moments to the interview, describing his approach to their new life together. “Joan figured out that if I’m not doing something, I’ll take a nap,” he said. “I stay busy. I do the laundry, the dishes, and cook. It’s a bit of Southern gentlemanship, I guess!”

For Chock, a big takeaway from his relationship with Joan is the importance of putting yourself out there. “You can find love at any age,” he said. “But you’ve got to make the effort. Don’t stay home — go meet people, show interest, and be willing to love.”

Joan agreed, adding that the key is being open to new experiences. “If you want love and companionship, you have to take risks. At our age, you’ve got your comfort zone, but if you want to find something real, you have to shake things up.”

The Next Step: New York and Beyond

Looking ahead, the couple has big plans. They’ll be shopping for a new home in New York City on November 18, but will also keep their homes in D.C. and Kansas for now. Joan is excited to introduce Chock to her family in Maryland, while Chock is looking forward to spending more time with his family as well.

Their love story is a reminder that it’s never too late to find companionship, and for Joan and Chock, taking that leap of faith was the best decision they’ve ever made.
