A Difficult Turn: Gerry Turner Opens Up About His Battle with Bone Marrow Cancer
In a surprising and emotional revelation, The Golden Bachelor star Gerry Turner has shared that he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone marrow cancer. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine in December 2024, the 72-year-old reality TV alum confirmed he has Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia — a slow-growing, incurable but treatable cancer that affects white blood cells.
The diagnosis came after Turner experienced persistent shoulder pain and went to see an orthopedic specialist. Further testing revealed the unexpected condition.
“This Wasn’t What I Expected” — The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
“I went in thinking it was a rotator cuff injury,” Turner said. “Next thing I know, they’re telling me I have a rare blood cancer. It was shocking, but I knew I had to face it head-on.”
Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia is a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that often causes fatigue, weakness, and chronic pain. Though it progresses slowly, it requires lifelong monitoring and, in some cases, treatment like chemotherapy or targeted therapy.
Turner has since begun a treatment regimen under the care of a specialist team in Indiana. He remains optimistic and says his outlook has been shaped by the lessons he’s learned from both loss and love.
A Message of Strength and Gratitude
Despite the diagnosis, Turner remains active and hopeful. “I’ve faced grief, heartbreak, and now this. But I’m still standing, still grateful, and still ready for life,” he shared.
He credits his daughters, grandchildren, and new partner, Lana, for being strong sources of support. Lana, a retired teacher from Indiana, has reportedly been by his side throughout the medical process.
