Ghosts season 4 has a massive holiday special that changes the landscape for Jay, Sam, and the spirits at Woodstone Mansion. In the two-part Christmas special, “A Very Ardondekar Christmas,” things get interesting when Jay’s parents come to visit. To worsen already complicated dynamics (or maybe help them), Sam and Jay are both possessed by ghosts after they electrocute themselves. When Nancy and Pete take over Sam and Jay’s bodies, respectively, Pete’s possession presents a new conundrum for the cohort: Pete can’t be expelled through the ghost boundary due to his non-geographically bound ghost spirit power.

Things intensify as Sam tries to expel Pete’s spirit, but her actions temporarily cause her husband’s spirit to leave his body instead, and Jay becomes a quasi-ghost. The announcement built anticipation of Jay interacting with the ghosts in the coming season, since it would mark the first time Jay interacts with the spirits in his home. Jay Has Enhanced His Paranormal Perspective

In a report from TV Insider, Rose McIver explains how Jay’s big Christmas episode moment is pivotal for the show. The Sam actor notes that Jay has a “one up on Sam” after his brief spirit encounter with the ghosts. While Sam can uniquely see the dead permanently due to a near-fatal injury, Jay’s season 4 twist enables him to become a spirit. Therefore, Jay can interact with the ghosts, hugging and embracing them while existing on the same metaphysical plane. Jay one-ups Sam’s ability to see the ghosts by actually being able to share their experience.

McIver claims that Jay’s twist is game-changing for the show because he can now associate a face to all the ghosts’ time periods and backstories that his wife has shared with him. More than that, Jay’s ability to see ghosts surpasses Sam’s in a way, and he can have a more intimate experience with them as one of them. Jay’s new connection to the ghosts means he can relate to Sam in new ways, potentially bringing the couple closer. Why Ghosts Can Make Jay See The Spirits Permanently?

Sam’s ability to see the ghosts in the couple’s country mansion is a bedrock of the show’s comedy model. Sam often has to explain what the ghosts are saying to Jay, with her husband frequently missing out on significant events, and the disconnect sparks humorous moments. Therefore, Jay seeing the ghosts permanently is divisive because it risks breaking CBS’ hit sitcom. On the one hand, it’s excellent for Jay to see the ghosts, allowing him to feel apart from the events in his home. Then again, Jay’s regular interaction with the ghosts risks changing a show that warrants few improvements.

However, CBS has the reigns to shape the sitcom series, with very little source material to honor. So far, expanding the rich Ghosts lore has only enhanced the series, and the potential for Jay’s regular interaction with the ghosts provides an opportunity to change the lore in a big way. While the series has been successful so far, a significant change could be the risk the show needs to take as it moves into a likely Ghosts season 5. Jay’s ability to see the ghosts allows the characters to interact more profoundly, to Jay’s benefit.
