Although the Ghosts season 4’s finale big Jay twist was unexpected, this was at least partially due to the fact that Sam should have known about Elias’s plan long before he pulled it off. The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts ask a lot of Sam and Jay, and they aren’t always particularly appreciative of the efforts of their human cohabitants. As Jay noted in season 4, episode 22, “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone,” the couple has spent a lot of money making life easier for the ghosts over the years and have seen little in return.
In fairness, Isaac’s book fares well in the Ghosts season 4 finale and this could go some way to repaying the debt that the ghosts collectively owe the couple. However, since Sam and Jay were considering hiring Ghosts season 4 guest star Kyle as an assistant, the ghosts are likely to have run up a pretty major debt. Trevor does have a job, but the events of “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone” prove that the ghosts don’t really prioritize helping out the Woodstone Mansion’s human inhabitants, even outside of financial matters.
Ghosts Season 4’s Finale Noted That Sam Should Have Known About Elias
Jay’s Fate Could Have Been Avoided In Ghosts Season 4’s Finale
In the twist ending of “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone,” Jay reveals that he unknowingly hired the demonic Elias as his publicist. This means that Jay indirectly sold his soul to the devil, since Elias is able to take on human form to collect souls through Faustian contracts as a higher-level demon. As far as Ghosts season 4’s twists go, this was a pretty effective shock.
After all, viewers already knew that Jay was considering signing over his soul to Elias thanks to the ending of episode 14, “Alexander Hamilton and the Ruffle Kerfuffle.” In that outing, Elias failed to convince Thor to sell his soul, so he moved on to posing as a human and tempting Jay. Jay said he needed to think the deal over, frustrating Elias, but he must have changed his mind and signed off-screen between episodes.
Why The Spirits Never Told Sam About Elias’ Return
Sam Could Have Warned Jay Off His Deal With Elias
The thing is, as the ghosts noted, Sam should have known about Elias by the time “The Devil Went Down to Woodstone” took place. Admittedly, it would have been hard for Sam to stop Jay from meeting random people and interacting with them. That said, she could have warned him of any suspicious offers that sounded too good to be true, or at least told him what Elias looked like. However, even though Jay’s unique role in Ghosts leaves him particularly vulnerable to supernatural threats, the ghosts never informed Sam that Elias could pose as a human.
Thor admitted that they should have told her in the intervening eight episodes but didn’t.
The ghosts somehow never told Sam about Hetty’s former husband becoming a demon who could convincingly pose as a human, even though she was the only person in the mansion they could tell. In lieu of a more substantial justification, this oversight seems to come down to their collective incompetence and self-centred thinking, as Thor admitted that they should have told her in the intervening eight episodes but didn’t.
How Sam & The Spirits Can Save Jay In Ghosts Season 5
The Ghosts May Work Out A Way To Get Jay Out Of Elias’s Deal
Fortunately, it is not too late for the spirits to make things up to Jay in Ghosts season 5. Already, Trevor talked Thor out of signing Elias’s deal and the demon admitted that he didn’t have unlimited powers and was reliant on his contracts. With Trevor’s business experience, Hetty’s years of dealing with Elias, and Pete’s handy new ability to travel the globe at will, the ghosts have plenty of ammunition in their fight against Elias.
This will likely mean that Ghosts season 5 has to explain the show’s version of Hell more thoroughly, but this was already an overdue change. Ghosts season 4’s finale seemingly promised that Elias’s return would result in Patience’s exit, but Jay’s fate was a more unexpected, exciting twist that gives the ghosts a bigger battle to fight in Ghosts season 5.
