Although the cast of Ghosts seemed to get a new member in season 4, episode 15, viewers shouldn’t get too attached to his continued presence in future outings. The ghosts of CBS’s Ghosts are the show’s true heroes, despite how big a role Sam and Jay might play. The living residents of the Woodstone Mansion are theoretically the ones who have the most agency but, in reality, the ghosts are the ones running the show. Luckily, they are a fun enough bunch to make this dynamic work.
While Ghosts season 4 has wasted a few characters in its first 15 outings, the show has mostly managed to give every member of its large ensemble of spirits a moment in the spotlight. There are entire episodes that go by without mentioning Sass or Flower, but these supporting stars always end up getting a bigger role soon after to make up for this. Even my least favorite Ghosts character Carol ended up playing a pivotal role in season 4, episode 13, “Ghostfellas,” where she saved Jay and Sam from ruin at the hands of her mob family.
Woodstone Mansion Gets A New Ghost In Season 4, Episode 15
Chris The Stripper Died While Skydiving Into A Bachelorette Party
Despite the sitcom’s ability to handle a large main cast, viewers shouldn’t get too attached to the new arrival from Ghosts season 4, episode 15, “The Bachelorette Party.” The Australian male stripper Chris appeared before in season 3, episode 10, “Isaac’s Wedding,” where he performed a strip tease for Isaac’s ghost before his wedding. Although that wedding was called off at the last second, Chris still returned to “The Bachelorette Party” to perform for a live audience this time. Sadly, his sophomore performance ended in an unexpected tragedy for the stripper.
Chris crashed through Jay’s nearby restaurant Mahesh when a parachute stunt went awry, meaning “The Bachelorette Party” ended with the titular stripper dying on a table.
Chris was scheduled to perform a dance for Alberta’s great-grandniece Alicia, but things went badly wrong when Sam paid extra for the “It’s Raining Men” package. In theory, Chris was supposed to parachute into the party and perform. In reality, Chris crashed through Jay’s nearby restaurant Mahesh when a parachute stunt went awry, meaning “The Bachelorette Party” ended with the titular stripper dying on a table and immediately appearing as a ghost. However, before fans get their hopes up, it is unlikely that the dead stripper will really join the main cast for numerous reasons.
Ghosts’ History Hints That Chris Won’t Be A Regular Spirit
Carol, Crash, Stephanie, and the Basement Ghosts Prove Chris May Not Appear Regularly
While this is easy to forget, characters have died in the Woodstone Mansion and have not become permanent main characters in Ghosts before. Pete’s unfaithful wife Carol died while at the mansion and, even though Pete is Ghosts season 4’s main character, she is effectively only a background figure in the sitcom. Carol is rarely a main character, and she is often absent entirely. As such, the same fate could well befall Chris, judging by the many other spirits that populate the mansion. Although there are a lot of them, they don’t always appear in the series.
The beheaded greaser Crash appears in numerous outings but is often absent for almost entire seasons at a time. Similarly, Stephanie the prom ghost only wakes up once a year around prom night, while the basement ghosts play an atypical supporting role in the show. Episodes like “A Very Arondekar Christmas Part 1” make Nancy a relatively central character, but she is often absent for numerous episodes in a row and the rest of the basement ghosts play an even more limited role in the series.
It wouldn’t make sense for the series to add another main character unless at least one of the existing ghosts got “Sucked off” into the afterlife.
To be fair to the series, Ghosts season 4 revealing the basement ghosts’ shared power means that the sitcom might end up utilizing them more regularly going forward. However, this doesn’t make Chris any more likely to become a series regular. Since Ghosts already struggles to find sufficient screen time for all of its main characters and often has to leave one or two ghosts out of each episode, it wouldn’t make sense for the series to add another main character unless at least one of the existing ghosts gets “Sucked off” into the afterlife.
Why It’s Unlikely That Chris Becomes A Regular Cast Member In Ghosts Season 4
Actor Deniz Akdeniz Is Busy With Another High-Profile Project
Ghosts already needs to rotate through its large cast without adding Chris into the mix, and it is worth remembering the show’s penchant for flashbacks while considering this. Episodes like Ghosts season 4, episode 14, “Alexander Hamilton and the Ruffle Kerfuffle,” are notable for spending most of their screen time recounting a flashback that stars one of the ghosts. As long as the show continues to take this approach on occasion, Ghosts will have even less time to prioritize new characters like Chris due to its regular lengthy flashbacks.
Furthermore, Chris’s actor Deniz Akdeniz is already a series regular in High Potential, which has recently been renewed for a second season. ABC’s crime procedural was a massive ratings hit so, although Ghosts is a successful sitcom, Akdeniz doesn’t need to return as Chris to ensure he has a role in a major network show. This proves that the odds of Ghosts season 4 giving Chris a bigger role as the series continues aren’t too high.
How Ghosts Can Still Utilize Chris Properly Despite Not Being A Core Cast
Chris Could Appear Relatively Regularly Like Carol
Luckily, Chris not becoming a main character in season 4 doesn’t mean he can’t play a great role in the show. Ghosts season 4’s sitcom storytelling allows the show to carry storylines from one episode into another, introducing some serialized style into a largely episodic show. This is good news for Chris since it means Akdeniz’s character could be the star of a few upcoming episodes as he gets accustomed to life after death. Early in season 4, Mary Holland’s Puritan ghost Patience was added to the show’s lineup.
Although Patience hasn’t appeared since episode 3, “Halloween IV: The Witch,” her role in the show felt simultaneously satisfying and open-ended. Her brief character arc got three episodes to shine, but her ambiguous departure left room for a future comeback. Similarly, Chris might remain a major figure in the sitcom as he adjusts to the afterlife, but transition to a supporting role as he becomes a mainstay at the mansion. Thus, Ghosts season 4 can use its best new supporting star in a way that does his character justice without straining the show’s overstuffed cast beyond its breaking point.
