The winter premiere of Chicago Fire delivered a dramatic return for fans, especially for Joe Cruz (played by Joe Miñoso). As Season 13 unfolded, Cruz faced new challenges that will ripple through upcoming episodes, with repercussions expected to peak in Episode 10, titled “Chaos Theory.” Set to air on January 15, the episode promises high stakes as Firehouse 51 navigates crises, personal struggles, and a looming crossover event on January 29—marking the first One Chicago universe crossover in six years.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Miñoso shared insights into Cruz’s evolving journey, his ambitions, and how past relationships continue to shape his character’s path.
Cruz Faces Consequences in Season 13
When asked how Cruz will handle the fallout from Junior’s release from prison, Miñoso didn’t sugarcoat the challenges ahead. “Poorly,” he admitted. “He’s going to make some decisions that really put him in hot water, and the ramifications of that will really show up in Episode 10.”
Cruz’s devotion to his family remains his driving force, even if it means navigating dangerous waters. “Cruz is, and always will be, concerned about protecting his family first and foremost. Unfortunately, that means he’ll get tangled up in a big old mess. Let’s hope he comes out the other side of it, though it won’t be unscathed.”
While this storyline is expected to conclude before the crossover event, Miñoso hinted that it will leave a lasting impression on both Cruz and the audience.
Cruz’s Career Aspirations and Firehouse Loyalty
Cruz’s decision not to pursue the lieutenant’s test remains a pivotal moment in his career. Miñoso elaborated on his character’s mindset, emphasizing the balance between ambition and loyalty.
“Cruz has been the acting lieutenant on Squad 3 for a couple of years, and there’s always a part of him that wonders about the path not taken,” Miñoso explained. “But right now, he’s focused on being a father and providing for his family. Money is always on his mind, especially with two kids to think about.”
He also touched on Cruz’s bond with Severide, which has deepened this season. “Earlier in the season, there was some tension, but they’ve mended those wounds. Firehouse 51 is Cruz’s family, and he loves being a part of it. Right now, he’s happy to stay.”
The Legacy of Otis
One of the most enduring aspects of Cruz’s journey is the impact of his late friend Otis, played by Yuriy Sardarov. Miñoso spoke fondly about their relationship, both on and off-screen.
“My son’s name is Otis,” Miñoso revealed, highlighting the profound effect the character—and Sardarov—has had on his life. “Yuriy and I were the last two cast on the show, and we’ve been tied at the hip since the very first episode. I think there is no Cruz without Otis. Their bond is what made the show successful and resonated with fans.”
Excitement for the One Chicago Crossover
The upcoming One Chicago crossover event has Miñoso buzzing with excitement. “I was thrilled to work with Steven Weber—though I joked that it was a disappointment,” he laughed. “The fact that we’ve built a universe with three interconnected shows running for over a decade is incredible. It’s a testament to the people involved.”
Miñoso also shared his admiration for Dermot Mulroney, who recently joined the cast as Chief Dom Pascal. “To be in scenes with someone like Dermot is living the actor’s dream,” he said.
Looking Ahead for Cruz
When asked what he hopes for Cruz’s future, Miñoso reflected on the journey so far. “After 13 years, I feel like I’ve had the best role in the One Chicago universe. I’ve done comedy, action, drama—it’s been a full experience. At this point, I just want security for Cruz. I want him to feel like he’s been a successful father and to continue finding happiness in his family.”
As for fans, Miñoso’s hope aligns with theirs: “We all want joy for the people we love. And I love Cruz. It’s been an honor to live in his skin for so long.”
