Chicago Fire Season 13 has taken an unexpected turn with the departure of Eamonn Walker’s Chief Boden and the arrival of Dermot Mulroney as Chief Dom Pascal. Firehouse 51 is adjusting to new leadership, and it’s proving to be anything but smooth. The friction was anticipated, but Mulroney’s recent comments shed light on how Pascal’s presence might permanently alter the dynamics at 51.
When the news first broke that Mulroney would step in instead of Herrmann taking Boden’s place, fans were divided. Many saw Pascal as a temporary placeholder, much like Lt. Pelham in Season 10, who filled in until Stella Kidd was ready to take the role full-time. However, Mulroney’s insights suggest that Pascal might be a lasting fixture. In an interview with TV Insider, Mulroney emphasized his character’s determination to stick around, regardless of Herrmann’s ambitions.
Reflecting on Pascal’s future, Mulroney stated, “I feel like Pascal was put directly in Herrmann’s path… as the heir apparent to that seat behind the chief’s desk. Well, sorry, Pascal’s here, and I don’t feel like he’s going anywhere.” This new angle hints at a brewing conflict, especially given Herrmann’s hopes to follow in Boden’s footsteps.
Pascal’s introduction has been described as causing an “earthquake” at 51, and he’s already made his presence known. He’s questioned Stella’s leadership and expressed concerns over her marriage to Squad Lieutenant Severide, adding tension to an already complicated relationship. Pascal’s no-nonsense approach has caused some fans to reconsider their views. Showrunner Andrea Newman revealed that Mulroney’s character was meant to bring new challenges to the firehouse, which could mean a season of clashing perspectives and unexpected alliances.
Fans are now left wondering if and when Boden might return, even if only for an occasional guest appearance. Eamonn Walker’s exit in Season 12 left the door open for Boden to return to the CFD without being a regular on the show. Should he come back, Boden could bring his steadying influence, adding a layer of complexity to Pascal’s leadership and Herrmann’s potential promotion.
For now, the Chicago Fire team and fans alike will have to wait to see if Pascal’s presence is a permanent shake-up or a temporary twist. New episodes of Chicago Fire, with Pascal at the helm of Firehouse 51, continue to air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, streaming on Peacock alongside the other One Chicago shows, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D.
