The most recent FBI spinoff, CIA, faces another hurdle after its showrunner, Warren Leight, leaves the show. His exit forces CBS to pause filming for the time being as the network figures out a new production plan.

Leight is the second showrunner to quit the show. CIA was originally supposed to be helmed by David Hudgins, who left in July. According to an exclusive from Variety, an insider claimed that Michael Weiss, the executive producer of its flagship show, FBI, will be taking over for him. While production has been delayed during this transition, the series premiere is still expected to air on time.

Leight is just the latest in a long chain of people leaving the CBS crime dramaAside from Hudgins, CIA’s executive producer, Eriq La Salle, also left the show. Just days before La Selle’s exit, actor Michael Michele parted ways with the series on November 1, 2025. She was supposed to portray the unnamed head of the CIA’s New York Station. While recasting has already begun, a replacement for Michele’s character has not been confirmed at the time of this article’s publication.

The FBI offshoot was created by Dick Wolf, Peter Jankowski, and Derek Haas. It will star Tom Ellis as Hart Hoxton and Nick Gehlfuss as Bill Goodman. The crime-fighting duo are described by CIA’s logline as “two unlikely partners. A fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon CIA case officer (Ellis), and a by-the-book, seasoned and smart FBI agent (Gehlfuss) who believes in the rule of law.” The series will also feature Natalee Linez (Gina Rojas).

CIA is currently set to be released on CBS during midseason 2026, which begins in January.
