The third show in the CBS FBI franchise, FBI: International, returned for its fourth season in late 2024, but the network has canceled it before season 5. Created by TV maven Dick Wolf and Derek Haas, International takes the procedural overseas and follows the FBI’s elite “Fly Team” headquartered in Budapest as they neutralize threats to the U.S. abroad. The show represents a major shift for the popular franchise, and moves the exciting action to brand-new shores which opens the door for unique storytelling opportunities. Regardless of the cases, International still invests time in its roster of characters as well.
Like all of Dick Wolf’s TV shows, the FBI franchise seemingly sprung up overnight, and what started as a single series has blossomed into a trilogy. FBI: International is the third and most recent spinoff, though it is quickly approaching a half-decade on the air already. Never afraid to take big risks with its characters and storytelling, International has set itself apart from its domestic counterparts, and this made the youngest FBI show’s future seem just as bright as its predecessors. Unfortunately, CBS canceled International and Most Wanted in early 2025.

FBI: International Season 5 Is Canceled
CBS Trims The FBI Franchise Down To One Series
Even though the FBI franchise was never as strong as competitors like NCIS or Law & Order, the multi-series universe was still one of CBS’ biggest hits. That’s why it was quite surprising when the network decided to cancel International and Most Wanted in the early months of 2025. FBI: International won’t return for season 5, though the flagship series has already been renewed for the eighth and ninth seasons. On top of that, development will continue on the upcoming spinoff, FBI: CIA.
No reason for the dual cancelation has been given, and it’s hard to say that low viewership numbers are the deciding factor. While FBI still reigns supreme with over 6 million average viewers, both International and Most Wanted drew in a healthy 4 million audience members on average. Even during their final seasons, the two spinoffs maintained audiences that are unheard of for other series. There are currently no plans to shop the series to other networks, and the overall plan for the FBI franchise is currently unclear.

It was expected that Eva-Jane Willis would be back as Europol Agent Megan “Smitty” Garretson, alongside Christina Wolfe as Agent Amanda Tate. The series also employed a host of special guest stars, but it’s impossible to guess who that could have been.
