Fans Still Wonder: What If Sheldon Had Chosen This Overlooked Love Interest Instead of Amy?

Before exchanging vows with Mayim Bialik’s Amy, Sheldon could’ve found his match in one other character, whose story was cut short.

When The Big Bang Theory initially commenced, Chuck Lorre and his collaborators had no intentions of pushing Jim Parson’s Sheldon into a romantic bond, as the creator felt Cooper was complete by himself. But as the story goes, they changed this direction after the introduction of Mayim Bialik’s Amy.

However, there could’ve been another potential love interest for Sheldon, who was introduced in season 9 of the sitcom and was swiftly discharged from the show in favor of a gag.

The Big Bang Theory Could’ve Expanded on Vanessa’s Story

In episode 8 of season 9, The Mystery Date Observation. Jim Parsons‘ Sheldon comes across Lio Tipton’s Vanessa Bennet after Raj and Howard set up a Craigslist ad in search of a potential girlfriend for Sheldon. Upon her arrival, it seemed she ticked all the boxes that would make her and Sheldon compatible, as the sitcom shed light on her intelligence during the character’s brief stay.

But despite an enjoyable exchange, to everyone’s surprise, including Raj and Howard, Sheldon shuts the door because she missed the deadline and found atomic spectroscopy boring. While the scene was successful with its comedic set-up and payoff, to this date, fans feel the writers missed out on a major opportunity by not delving into a romantic tangent with the two.

Fortunately, things worked out greatly between Sheldon and Amy, and the latter’s involvement in the show also took the burden off Parsons’ shoulders.

Jim Parsons Had No Hesitancy Over the Shift in His Character’s Romantic Direction

Although Jim Parsons too initially entertained the prospect of Sheldon being asexual with science being his lone mistress, he had no issues when Chuck Lorre opted to push his character into a romantic direction.

Sheldon was complete without a relationship. And that broke ground a little bit, along with the fact that he could articulate those wishes. He was not unconsciously avoiding contact with people. He looked at it, he analyzed it, and said, ‘I want no part of this.’ Science was his mistress.

Just like his initial stance on Sheldon’s sexuality, the actor readily accepted the new fate of his character upon Amy’s arrival (via USA Weekly).

I as easily accepted his asexuality as I eventually did his odd sexuality once Amy was on.

Even though it would’ve been interesting to see how a potential dating scenario between Vanessa and Sheldon would’ve turned out, given how things concluded for him and Amy, there isn’t much room for complaints.
