Ghosts season 4 finale finally gives Jay the focus he deserves. Many of the spirits got updates to their ghost powers in season 4, like the reveal of Hetty’s power in Ghosts season 4, episode 16, or the realization that there are roamers other than Pete. Emotionally, Sass has a major romantic update in Ghosts season 4, episode 21, when he takes things to the next level with Joan.
Sam and especially Jay can sometimes fade into becoming almost plot points in the spirits’ stories. However, in the Ghosts season 4 finale, the show finally turns its attention to one of its most snubbed characters: Jay. TheGhosts season 4 ending is a cliffhanger, with Jay’s very soul on the line. This means Jay will be a focal point of the beginning of season 5, a welcome change for one of the show’s funniest, but most frustratingly limited characters.
Ghosts Has Never Given Jay His Due Despite Being A Main Character
Jay Has A One-Way Communication Barrier With Every Main Character But Sam
Jay is technically a main character in Ghosts, but he is often sidelined because of the one-way communication barrier, as the spirits can see him, but he cannot see them. Jay has been used repeatedly in Ghosts season 4 as a plot device to accidentally share a secret. While comedic miscommunication is a hallmark of all sitcoms, Ghosts needs to find a fresh way to use Jay in seasons 5 and 6.
Ghosts season 4, episode 21 validates Jay’s ongoing complaint of being left out in his own home. Kyle, a Living who can see ghosts like Sam, tells her how hard it is to keep a real relationship when you’re living between planes of existence. Jay seemed to be having more to do when he opened his restaurant Mahesh, even hiring his sister Bela as manager. However, when the restaurant had to shut down after the events of Ghosts season 4, episode 15, Jay was relegated to a less central position.
Jay Is At The Center Of The Ghosts Season 4 Finale
Elias Woodstone Returns To Get His End Of Their Bargain From Ghosts Season 4, Episode 14
The ghosts make fun of Jay for taking headshots in the hopes of having his restaurant Mahesh featured in a magazine. At that moment, Patience, the Puritan spirit, is drawn to Woodstone Manor because she senses a demonic presence. Sam assumes Patience felt Sam and Isaac’s book launch, an “unholy event” to celebrate their vampire novel. Sam pacifies Patience by falsely promising to cancel the party, then the ghosts suggest she might be sensing a presence in the main house.
However, Jay’s sister Bela ruins the ruse by talking on the phone in the house where Patience overhears her. Patience returns to Mahesh, where the book launch is being held, and uses her one ace: drawing blood out of the walls that Living can see. However, Jay cleverly spins this as a shockingly realistic effect appropriate for the launch of a vampire novel.
The event is a huge success. Sam and Jay toast to how everything is starting to click. Jillian Klein, food editor for New York Mag, introduces herself, offering him a full cover story on Jay and Mahesh. Jillian credits Jay’s publicist as being the one to put such a hidden gem on her team’s radar. Jay introduces Sam to the publicist he was too embarrassed to tell her about, but “Brent McAffee” the publicist turns out to be Elias Woodstone in corporeal form, emissary for the devil and Hetty’s husband in life.
Jay did not read his contract thoroughly in Ghosts season 4, episode 14, so in exchange for making his dreams come true, like the restaurant write-up, Jay signed his soul over to Satan. Jay wants to cancel the contract, but Elias says it’s airtight, and to enjoy the little time he has left. Later, Jay calls out to Sam to use the toaster for him – he’s now knowingly living in a Final Destination movie.
Ghosts Season 5 Will See Sam & The Spirits Save Jay
Jay’s Cliffhanger Will Be Resolved In Ghosts Season 5
The Ghosts season 4 finale brilliantly finds a way to introduce stakes that don’t involve one of the spirits getting sucked off. For once, Sam and the ghosts will have to rally to save Jay’s soul. I suspect Pete’s power of roaming might come in handy, or perhaps Kyle or Joan will have encountered someone who got out of a contract with the devil in their travels. Jay is usually a tool for the ghosts’ whims, so it’s great to see such an underused character become the focal point of a major storyline.
Sam and Jay make a lot of sacrifices for the Woodstone Manor ghosts, but she, at least, gets to interact with them, becoming friends if not family, while Jay cannot form relationships with beings he can’t see or hear. Jay’s toast to Sam and Isaac’s book mentions that he hopes the profits begin to offset the money they waste on the ghosts, which is a good reminder that the ghosts are constantly taking but give nothing back to Jay, in particular.
Beyond the financial drain, Ghosts season 4, episode 21 beautifully captures how lonely Jay is, because while this situation is ideal for the ghosts, it is lonely and isolating for Jay. Jay has made so many sacrifices, that it feels overdue to see the ghosts work together for Jay’s benefit for once in Ghostsseason 5.
