Many fans are eagerly awaiting Virgin River season six after Netflix released a new synopsis that teased what’s to come. However, some viewers are concerned that one particular storyline could get “cheesy.”
The new synopsis reads: “Set against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth season promises fresh twists, twists and turns in love triangles [and] wedding romances.”
Furthermore, the sixth season will delve into “undiscovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past that will take us into the magic and mystery of Virgin River in the 1970s.”
So, it seems that while the Netflix show will focus on the future of Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson) and Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) in the upcoming season, it will also focus on Mel’s parents.
This comes after Mel was finally reunited with her biological father Everett Reid (John Allen Nelson) in the Christmas special of series five. Now, fans can look forward to a trip back to the 1970s to see Mel’s late mother Sarah (Jessica Rothe) and her biological father, Everett (Callum Kerr), in a series of flashbacks.
Netflix is introducing recurring characters while also considering expanding the Virgin River universe with a spin-off prequel show that would follow Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
On Reddit, fans expressed their concerns about the storyline potentially becoming too cheesy in season six.
One fan wrote: “It’s so lame that it turns out that Mel’s mother and father somehow met in Virgin River, the very town she chose, out of thousands in the state, after her husband’s death.
“Especially when it’s never been mentioned before about her going there because her mom always talks about the town as some kind of premonition etc. So it’s just a little too obvious and cheesy.
“I haven’t read the books so I haven’t followed but this whole storyline about her finding out her dad isn’t her real dad and now the connection to Virgin River and all that is just General Hospital/Days of Our Lives.” (sic) Another fan agreed: “I have to agree. I love this show. It’s a comfort show for me and I will continue to watch but that storyline is not one of my favourites.” (sic) A third wrote: “I agree. I was so disappointed they made the decision to add that in. It’s incredibly cheesy.”
Another added: “I didn’t really care for the real dad storyline, it was so out of place and unnecessary.”
Others, however, seemed excited about the new plot development, with one fan enthusing: “Looks like we’re getting that spin-off, looking forward to Season 6, hopefully it’ll be out before the end of the year.” (sic) While an official release date for season six has yet to be announced, the first five seasons of Virgin River are already available to stream on Netflix.
