The Rookie‘s enormous cast is one of the best parts of the show, but moving forward, it needs to increase its focus on 1 character. Every character in the police procedural has their own special characteristics and everyone feels different. Although there are so many of them, most of them have gotten episodes from their own perspective to give the fans a better look into their lives and their jobs. By doing this, the audience feels a deeper connection to The Rookie cast, especially in the big moments.

Although the ensemble is all fantastic in their own ways, there is always the same problem with a cast this large. Some get left behind in order to serve the larger story of the team as a whole. The Rookie has been on for 7 seasons, giving it plenty of time to develop every player. However, that is not the case. In fact, there is still one character that hasn’t gotten their due. The Rookie season 8 needs to give him his own episodes to keep him relevant to the larger story.

A Day In The Life Of Sergeant Grey Would Help Flesh Out An Underutilized Rookie Character

We Should See Everything That He Does Behind The Scenes To Ensure A Smooth Day At Mid-Wilshire

Sergeant Grey (Richard T. Jones) is one of the characters that has been in the show since the beginning. He is the one that keeps everyone on track, the rookies in line, and does what he can to cut any red tape his team might encounter. In The Rookie, Grey even supports the Chenford romance. He has not been utilized to his full potential in the show and a day in the life kind of episode would help to rectify this. We only see him when the police in Mid-Wilshire are in any trouble or in need of guidance. It would be interesting to see what else he does throughout his day.

One of the most important parts of his job is his interactions with not only rookie cops, but also the senior ones. During this type of episode, we could see how he treats other officers that are not part of the main cast. A meeting with someone like Smitty would not only be hilarious, but also give a bit more depth to Grey, something he has been lacking throughout the series. Grey treats the main cast of cops like they are family, so it would add to his character if we could see that through other characters as well.

Luna And Wade Working Together Could Open The Door For A Larger Storyline

Their Marriage Has Been Set Aside For Far Too Long

Through all the complicated relationships in the show, it is nice to see at least one solid couple — Wade and Luna. Their marriage is very strong, but it’s something we just haven’t seen in recent seasons. Whenever Luna is brought back into the show, it is briefly, and she does not interact with Wade anymore. A couple of episodes of the two of them working together exclusively could open up a larger storyline for the rest of the cast.

By partnering Grey and Luna, The Rookie will help develop Wade’s character and show his personal side as opposed to just the professional one.

Luna is a social worker at St. Vincent’s, the hospital of choice for the characters. If there is some sort of corruption in the hospital, they will turn to her for advice, much like they did for Sergeant Grey. Since the two of them are seen as the voice of reason, a storyline where they can team up professionally would be a great storyline. By partnering Grey and Luna, The Rookie will help develop Wade’s character and show his personal side as opposed to just the professional one.

The Rookie Season 8 Can Be More Strategic With Its Filler Episodes

It Is Time For The Filler Episodes To Mean Something Other Than Just Comedic Relief

The Rookie, like any other long-running series, is known to have a few filler episodes. Unfortunately, the fillers in recent seasons have lacked any sort of substance. They do not help develop the story or the characters. They feel like they are there just for laughs. It is hard to enjoy these episodes when they do not mean anything to the main characters. After The Rookie season 7, season 8 has the chance to change this formula by giving us sincere stories that revolve around the characters we love instead of an episode set just for comedic relief.

Characters like Sergeant Grey and Luna are not main players necessarily, but they are necessary to the story.

If the writers started to give some sort of substance to these episodes, it would make them much more enjoyable and easier to digest.
