“Exclusive First Look: Clark Gregg Joins ‘Will Trent’ Season 2 in Exciting New Role”

Will Trent’s top-notch detective skills won’t be needed to solve the mystery of who Clark Gregg is in the ABC drama’s Season 2 premiere.

TVLine was first to report that the Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum would be making a guest appearance (see the previously released promo above)—but we couldn’t share any more details at the time. Now, we can exclusively reveal that Gregg will appear in the first two episodes of Season 2 as Arthur Highsmith, an accountant who gets caught up in a bad situation and tries to skip town. Check out a first look photo below: In the Season 2 premiere—airing Tuesday, February 20 at a new time, 8/7c—“a car bomb sparks a thrilling investigation for Will and a bomb expert (played by This Is Us’ Susan Kelechi Watson) that reveals more than meets the eye,” according to the official synopsis. “As the plot unfolds, Angie (Erika Christensen) struggles to return to work, Ormewood’s (Jake McLaughlin) home life becomes complicated, and Faith (Iantha Richardson) develops a relationship with Luke (Ser’Darius Blain).”

Based on the best-selling novel by Karin Slaughter and helmed by TVLine Performer of the Year finalist Ramón Rodríguez, Will Trent focuses on a Special Agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. After being “abandoned at birth and enduring a brutal upbringing in Atlanta’s overburdened foster care system,” Will now uses his “unique perspective to pursue justice and has the highest clearance rate in the GBI,” according to his official logline.

The Season 1 finale of Will Trent revisited the circumstances of Will’s abandonment as a newborn. It turns out that GBI Deputy Director Amanda Wagner (played by Sonja Sohn) not only knew Will’s mother—a prostitute named Lucy Morales who died in childbirth—but also rescued Will after he was left for dead by serial killer James Ulster.

Amanda even intended to raise Will as her own son. Alas, adoption was out of the question for a single woman at the time. She thought she had placed Will with a good family and deeply regretted that his childhood had taken a different path. She did, however, give Will one thing: her mother’s maiden name, Trent.

Season 1 also left the fate of Angie, Will’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, open. Though she survived a serious beating at Ulster’s hands, her doctor gave no assurance, whatsoever, that she would overcome her injuries and avoid paralysis.

Will Trent Season 2 premieres Tuesday, February 20 at 8 p.m. on ABC, which will lead into new episodes of The Rookie (entering Season 6) and The Good Doctor (entering its seventh and final season).
