The bad news is that Will Trent won’t be back for season 3 until early 2025, but the good news is that an exciting actress is joining the main cast, taming any lingering unease around the wait. The ABC police procedural crime drama, created by Karin Slaughter, Liz Heldens, and Daniel T. Thomsen, is based on Slaughter’s Will Trent book series and its characters. However, while most of the characters in the crime drama can also be found in the novels, one new character in Will Trent season 3 is entirely original to the TV show.
After the shocking and thrilling conclusion of Will Trent season 2, things are about to change for Will, Angie, Faith, Ormewood, and Amanda. Will learns the truth behind Lenny’s death in season 1 after it’s revealed that Crystal is a serial killer who targets pedophiles. So Will has a choice to make. He could either help Angie continue to cover up Lenny’s murder or turn her in. Sadly, Will’s duty to the law overcame his heart, and Angie was arrested. As a result, Will went missing in the final moments of the finale, but he will return in season 3 and cross paths with the aforementioned new character.
According to Deadline, Gina Rodriguez has been cast as Marion Alba in Will Trent season 3 and will be a series regular. Marion is an Assistant District Attorney who is described as “charismatic” and “confident.” Rodriguez moved the character to Atlanta just before season 3 began, and Marion’s first interaction with Will doesn’t go well. However, Marion and Will are forced to work together to investigate a gang-related case, which could help them bond. Since Rodriguez will be a major cast member, it stands to reason that Marion would form a connection with Will.
With Rodriguez’s credentials and experience, the wait for Will Trent season 3 may not be as bad as it seems.
Rodriguez is a talented actress who would certainly be a great addition to the cast of Will Trent season 3. She is best known for her role as Jane Villanueva on the CW series Jane the Virgin, but Rodriguez also recently starred in the ABC comedy Not Dead Yet, which was canceled after two seasons. With Rodriguez’s credentials and experience, the wait for Will Trent season 3 may not be as bad as it seems.
Given the events of the season 2 finale, Gina Rodriguez’s Marion could be Will’s new love interest in Will Trent season 3. After all, Rodriguez is a series regular, and there wouldn’t be much reason for Marion to keep popping up if she didn’t have a personal relationship with Will. Although she works in law enforcement, Marion is not a detective or a GBI agent. An ADA probably wouldn’t be constantly working with the GBI to solve crimes, so it’s likely that Will will eventually find a new one in Will Trent season 3.
