Every Yellowstone Spinoff, Ranked
Yellowstone is ending, but fans aren’t done with the Dutton family. The franchise is filled with all kinds of spinoffs to keep the story going.
The Yellowstone universe has been filled with drama recently, with series lead Kevin Costner exiting the popular Paramount show ahead of Season 5, Part 2, which is set to air later this year. Even more disappointing for fans of the series, the upcoming episodes will bring Yellowstone to an end, closing the door on this chapter of the Dutton family saga.
While the flagship series may be on its final stretch, the Yellowstone universe is far from over. The franchise has already put forth several prequel series set in the same universe, with many more on the way. As a result, there are countless spinoffs, whether complete, ongoing, or yet future, that audiences can enjoy to keep the Yellowstone story alive.
56666 Will Tell The Story Of Yellowstone’s Four Sixes Ranch
- 6666 does not yet have a release date or a cast.
Of the many spinoffs currently planned for the Yellowstone universe, 6666 is the least-defined. The series will follow the events surrounding the Four Sixes Ranch seen in the original series. The 6666 ranch is a real-life location, which audiences may remember from Yellowstone‘s fourth season when Jimmy Hurdstram (Jefferson White) was sent there to learn what it took to become a cowboy.
While it is unclear precisely where 6666 will fit in Yellowstone‘s timeline or when the series will air, the spinoff certainly has potential. It will be the first entry in the franchise not to focus specifically on the Dutton family, but rather on the cowboy school that inhabits the titular ranch. The upcoming show is an exciting prospect, potentially distilling all of the best cowboy action of the original Yellowstone.
42024 Will Continue The Story Of The Dutton Family
- 2024 does not yet have a release date but is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
While most Yellowstone spinoffs dig deeper into the history of the Dutton family, the next upcoming series will pave the way into the future. 2024, as its name implies, will take place in 2024, shortly after the events of the original series, which will air its series finale sometime before the end of the year, though this has been called into question given the Writers and Actors Strikes of 2023.
The upcoming sequel series may incorporate elements and storylines originally planned for future seasons of Yellowstone, which was originally set to carry on beyond Season 5. While audiences still know very little about the upcoming series, 2024 will reportedly feature Matthew McConaughey in the lead role. The series may also choose to feature some characters from the original series, potentially including certain members of the Dutton family, thereby tying its storyline into that of Yellowstone. Needless to say, this is easily one of the most exciting Yellowstone spinoffs in development.
31944 Will Bridge The Gap Between 1923 And Yellowstone
- 1944 does not yet have an official release date or cast.
One of three planned spinoffs currently in development by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, 1944 will be set in the eponymous year. The upcoming spinoff will act as a sequel to 1923, falling between its events and those of the original series, though it is unclear to what extent it will tie into the events of the other shows in its shared universe.
Very little is known about 1944, but given Yellowstone‘s propensity to explore the historical events of its setting, it is very likely that the series will delve into how the Dutton family ranch was affected by World War II. Moreover, since the series was announced in conjunction with the events of 1923, it may include some of the younger characters from said series, including Spencer and Alexandra Dutton, expounding on their generation of the Yellowstone franchise’s central family.
21923 Keeps The Charm Of The Original Series
1923
- Season 2 of 1923 is expected to premiere in late 2024 or early 2025, though no official announcement has been made regarding the show’s return.
The second spinoff in the Yellowstone franchise, 1923 jumps back to the early 20th century, as the Dutton family struggles to keep its ranch running amid a country in turmoil. The series, which stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, includes storylines based around multiple major historical events in the 1920s, including the beginning of the Great Depression, showcasing how these events affected the Dutton family ranch.
Like its sister series, 1923 has been warmly received by critics for its immersive endeavor into the events of the past through the eyes of one central family. Audiences have had some gripes, however, with the series, taking issue with the show’s more sexualized content and political undertones. Nevertheless, the series proved popular enough to warrant a second season, which will complete the story of 1923 and this generation of the Dutton family.
11883 Is An Epic Origin Story For The Dutton Family
1883
The post-Civil war generation of the Dutton family travels to Texas, and joins a wagon train undertaking the arduous journey west to Oregon, before settling in Montana to establish what would eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch.
- Taylor Sheridan opted to develop additional spinoffs and prequels rather than make a second season in 1883 .
1883 was the first spinoff to join the Yellowstone universe, taking place, as its title implies, toward the end of the 19th century. The series explores the origins of the Dutton family as they survive and attempt to make a name for themselves in post-Civil War America. 1883 shows the Duttons migrating from their home in Tennessee in search of a new place to call home. The series starred numerous big-name stars, including Sam Elliot as Shea Brennan and Tim McGraw as James Dutton, the great-grandfather of Kevin Costner’s character from the original Yellowstone series.
Although it never returned for a second season, 1883 is the best series in the Yellowstone franchise except the flagship show itself. The spinoff does an excellent job of avoiding many of the pitfalls that many other prequels often fall into, telling its own compelling story that still happens to be connected to that of Yellowstone. Filled with exciting action, and compelling characters, and set against a backdrop of the true Wild West, 1883 is a must-watch series for anyone who enjoys the original series.
