Every TV Show Canceled in 2024 — And the Real Reasons Why

Beloved television shows being canceled is one of those problems fans will never stop having. It’s hard to give a precise number of how many series are made and canceled annually, but it’s estimated that at least 30% of all current network TV shows are abruptly ended each year. In some years, this rate was a lot higher. From 2009 to 2012, for example, the average percentage of new television series canceled within their first season was 65%.

In 2024, 55 shows were axed on American TV, with Netflix canceling more shows than any other streaming platform. Among the shows that were not renewed in 2024, many had well-planned endings to the series. Shows like The Boys, The Handmaid’s Tale, Outlander, Stranger Things, Andor, Tokyo Vice, or Big Mouth didn’t get canceled — not exactly. Rather, the story itself was always going somewhere and finally got there in the final season. However, others had abrupt endings. Shows like Kaos, Unstable, Evil, and How to Die Alone unfortunately didn’t get the well-developed finale fans wished for.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy told Variety in October 2024 that 9-1-1: Lone Star was canceled by Fox after Season 5 due to financial reasons.

Bosch: Legacy

The spinoff was canceled by Amazon Freevee in September 2024, months before the third and final season premiered. The show’s stars were unaware of the cancellation plans until after the Season 3 production had ended. Amazon cited the cancellation as part of a new streaming strategy.

FBI: International & FBI: Most Wanted

According to TV Line, CBS canceled both FBI spinoffs it had because Paramount didn’t have full control of the streaming rights. A new deal with Peacock made streaming FBI: International after Season 3 tricky. FBI: International suffered the same fate after its fifth season.

The Equalizer

CBS abruptly canceled The Equalizer in May 2025, after Season 5 had premiered in October 2024. Fans of the franchise were shocked by the news, but the reasons are not surprising. CBS claims it was because of low ratings and high production costs.

S.W.A.T.

CBS had plans to cancel S.W.A.T. two times before finally doing it in early 2025. Season 8 was the final one, and premiered in October 2024. The procedural had ups and downs in quality and viewership.

NCIS: Hawai’i

According to Variety, CBS executives said the decision to cancel NCSI: Hawai’i after Season 3 came down to a balance of cost and ratings.

7 Horror or Fantasy TV Series Canceled

Evil

Evil was canceled by Paramount+ after Season 4 despite massive success, a dedicated fanbase, and main stars that loved working on it. The creators were given additional episodes to wrap up the main plot of the show, but it was not planned to end that way. Star Katja Herbers has publicly voiced her desire to continue playing Dr. Kristen Bouchard.
