Don’t Get Your Hopes Up: ‘CIA’ Spinoff Drops Disheartening News About Cast Comebacks

The returns of FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted characters in CIA get a mixed update. Even though FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted were both cancelled by CBS, the franchise is still going strong. The network is moving forward with CIA, a new spinoff led by Lucifer and Tell Me Lies actor Tom Ellis, which will premiere later this year.

In an update from TVLine, the outlet clarifies there has been no decision made on whether characters from FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted will appear on CIA. According to sources, the spinoff is currently in a “bit of a holding pattern,” and no one other than Ellis has been cast. The focus, for now, seems to be to polish the scripts further and then announce a co-lead for Ellis.

There Are Other Priorities Besides Crossovers

FBI (2018)

Even though CIA won’t be out for several months, with an exact premiere date so far unknown, the premise of the new spinoff has been unveiled. It’ll focus on Hart Hoxton (Ellis), “a fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon CIA case officer.” He’ll work with a veteran FBI agent who trusts the rule of law.

…it sounds like the main objective is to make sure the CIA spinoff kicks off with a strong first season.

The odd couple are assigned to work out of the CIA’s New York Station, finding that their differences are strengths as they begin to work together. The project, which hails from Dick Wolf and FBI: Most Wanted showrunner David Hudgins, has the potential to stand out from the procedural pack.

Looking at Hudgins’ connection with FBI: Most Wanted, it even has a direct window to bring back some popular characters and make the unpopular FBI cancellations a bit easier to accept. But before getting into that, it sounds like the main objective is to make sure the CIA spinoff kicks off with a strong first season.
