Donnie Wahlberg’s Biggest Bombshells About ‘Blue Bloods’ Final Season: From Tears to a Possible Spinoff

What does the future have in store for Donnie Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods character, Danny Reagan? The New Kids on the Block singer has made some interesting revelations about filming the show’s series finale and portraying the well-liked NYPD detective.

Despite whatever ends up happening to his character, Donnie said that he is “just incredibly grateful” for “the journey” that he has had on Blue Bloods during an October 2024 interview with TV Guide Magazine.

On the Possibility of a Danny-Baez Romance
Some fans have been waiting patiently for a romance to happen for Danny and Marisa Ramirez’s Maria Baez for quite some time.

“The possibility of a Danny Baez romance has been discussed by a lot of people, not always by the show itself or the writers of the show, or even Marisa Ramirez and I,” Donnie told TV Insider in October 2024. “But I think the audience at first was reluctant for a possible Danny and Baez relationship because of the loss of Linda. I think that was very traumatic for the viewers. It was also very traumatic for me personally being a friend of Amy Carlson and for the show.”

“So I think for a long time everyone was very reluctant to even consider such a thing, but I think as the show is winding down, it’s become clear that they have a special partnership and a special bond and I don’t know and won’t say whether or not there will be or should be a relationship. I will only say that the final episode will make a lot of people smile — that’s all I’m saying — and cry, but also smile,” he added.

On the Emotional Final Day
Tom Selleck had tears welling in his eyes during the final day on the Blue Bloods set, Donnie revealed.

“The last day on the set of Blue Bloods was a lot of tears,” the Dreamcatcher actor recalled. “My final day was in the squad room where Danny and Baez filmed most of their scenes and Tom Selleck doesn’t come to the squad room ever — I don’t think he’s ever been in the squad room — but he came that day to watch us film the last day of the show. And seeing him there and seeing the emotion on his face, just it, yeah, turned on the waterworks for me.”

On a Potential Spinoff
While no official spinoff has been announced, Donnie expressed that he would be interested in continuing Danny’s story in some capacity.

“There’s been a lot of talk about spinoffs, about various spinoffs, all types of concepts of spinoffs. I, for me personally, would say whatever happens next, if it’s done with the spirit of Blue Bloods and done with the care that we tried to put into Blue Bloods every week, it would be something that I would look forward to watching or being a part of either way,” he he told TV Insider in October 2024. “I’ve heard stories of prequels, sequels, you name it. For me personally, I love the show. I’ve enjoyed working on it for 14 years and like I said, whatever comes next, as long as it has family at its core and the spirit of Blue Bloods, then I’m all for it.”

On the Final Farewell
Donnie further reflected on Tom’s emotional reaction to watching his colleagues wrap filming on the Blue Bloods set.

“Tom Selleck never really shows up in Donnie’s scenes,” he said in October 2024 while visiting Today With Hoda and Jenna. “It’s Danny world and Frank Reagan world.”

“He was there watching. I looked across the room and saw him standing there,” Donnie recalled. “Tom he’s a really serious and focused man. He likes to cover up his emotions. He doesn’t like to show vulnerability. I looked across and he had tears in his eyes. That memory for me still brings up a lot for me.”

On the Ending
Have tissues ready when watching the Blue Bloods series finale.

“There’ll be a lot of tears. I think the same kind of tears we had but there is a very sad scene that happens in the middle of the final episode which will be very emotional, but I think the audience is going to be really happy,” Donnie said during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s radio show in October 2024. “I think it feels like a finale but a hopeful forward-thinking finale.”
