Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 Release Date: When Is Yellowstone Returning?
So when is Yellowstone returning? We still don’t know Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2’s exact release date, but we do know the popular series is scheduled to return to Paramount Network at an unspecified date in November 2024. Earlier this year a Puck report noted “the final episodes” of Yellowstone Part 2 were “already written” and filming was scheduled to begin “in a few weeks,” so we’re hoping the Dutton ranch is back up and running. Speaking of the Duttons…
Why Did Kevin Costner Leave Yellowstone?
Ahead of Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2, many fans are wondering if Kevin Costner left the series for good or if John Dutton will be back for more new episodes. Buckle up — or should we say saddle up for a wild ride.
After Yellowstone Season 5, Part 1 wrapped, explosive Yellowstone reports suggested that creator Taylor Sheridan and star/EP Kevin Costner were feuding. In May 2023, fans learned Costner will be leaving the Yellowstone franchise after Season 5 and he reported wouldn’t return for Season 5, Part 2 unless he approved of John Dutton’s final storyline. In June 2023, Sheridan entered the chat, telling The Hollywood Reporter he was “disappointed” by Costner’s exit but adding, “I don’t do fuck-you car crashes… Whether [Dutton’s fate] inflates [Costner’s] ego or insults is collateral damage that I don’t factor in with regard to storytelling.”
In September 2023, People reported that when asked if he’d be receiving a salary for the second half of Season 5, Costnery detailed struggles while negotiating, saying, “I will probably go to court over it.” However, Costner gave a more hopeful update on his potential return in an April 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying, “I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to…I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
Costner’s co-star Luke Grimes, who plays his on-screen son, also recently weighed in on the actor’s decision to step back from the series ahead of Season 5, Part 2. As Decider reported, per Grimes, Costner had become “busy” pursuing other “passion projects,” such as his upcoming Western Horizon: An American Saga. “Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show was going to unfold,” Grimes told The Independent recently. “At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man…You gotta do what you love.” So if Costner doesn’t return, does that mean Yellowstone ends?
Will Yellowstone Have A Season 6?
In May 2023, it was confirmed that Yellowstone Season 5 will be the show’s final season, which means Season 6 likely won’t happen, with or without Costner.
The Latest Yellowstone Spinoff Updates:
Although Yellowstone will be ending, new Yellowstone spinoffs will reported be beginning.
Two spinoffs — currently titled 1944 and 2024 — are in the works and though specific details have yet to be released, Variety reports that 2024 is expected to begin airing after Yellowstone ends. The show will allegedly feature “new cast members and locations with some crossover characters as well,” and this may be the series that includes Matthew McConaughey, who’s been rumored to star in a Yellowstone spinoff since April 2023.
Yellowstone star Cole Hauser, who plays Rip on the series, also teased a potential future project of some sort with his co-star Kelly Reilly, who plays his wife Beth Dutton. In an interview with Country Living, Hauser said, “…I know that there’s some stuff on the horizon when it comes to Taylor [Sheridan]’s ideas for Kelly Reilly and myself and some of the other cast. I’m excited to see where he goes creatively with that but right now it’s just, ‘Let’s finish strong. Let’s do the best we can.’”

When Does Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Premiere In Theaters?
Another Yellowstone adjacent project fans can look forward to while they wait for new episodes is Kevin Costner’s multi-part Western movie Horizon: An American Saga — which he starred in, directed, co-wrote, and produced.
Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 28, with Part 2 released on August 16. Before the two-part movie hits theaters, however, the highly-anticipated Western will make its world premiere today, May 19 , at the Cannes Film Festival.
“I’ve been waiting for the right time to return and I’m proud to say that this time has come,” Costner told Variety. “Horizon, An American Saga is a story that began 35 years ago, and I can’t think of a better place than Cannes to reveal to the world the result of such a wonderful adventure. The French have always supported films and deeply believed in filmmaking. Just as I believe deeply in my film.”
In the past week, an eventful new trailer for the film was released and per Variety, “Daniel Baur‘s K5 Intl. has sold out most of international on Kevin Costner‘s two-part Western epic Horizon: An American Saga,” with only a few territories left, ahead of its world premiere Sunday in Cannes’ out of competition section.” We can’t wait for early launches to roll in.
