Though he hasn’t always been a front-runner, I’m starting to think Guy Gansert could be The Golden Bachelor. Guy, a 66-year-old ER doctor from Reno, Nevada, made his television debut as a contestant on the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelorette. 62-year-old Joan Vassos liked him so much he was one of her final two men, but she gave her final rose to 60-year-old Chock Chapple. Though Guy would have been the natural choice for the next Golden Bachelor, I was convinced his shocking personal scandal would make him ineligible.
Much like Joan, I liked Guy right away. The ER doctor was a favorite among the other 23 single Golden men vying for Joan’s heart. I was especially moved when he helped fellow contestant Charles Ling work through some personal trauma associated with the death of his late wife. And when retired Navy captain Kim Buike wanted to sing Joan a group song, all the other men refused, but Guy was the only one who was willing to stand by him. I think he’d be a natural choice for The Golden Bachelor season 2, despite his scandal.
Guy Was Joan’s Runner-Up
She Appreciated His Good Bedside Manner
Guy stood out to Joan from the first night of The Golden Bachelorette season 1, and set himself apart throughout the season as a kind person who other contestants seemed to genuinely like. They spent the whole season bonding, and she even went to his hometown to meet his family and friends. Though I always believed Joan preferred Chock, I initially thought Guy would be an ideal choice for The Golden Bachelor season 2. He’s attractive, in great shape, and he’s a doctor. He seemed like the perfect package and the kind of man any woman would appreciate.
Guy’s Ex-Wife’s Allegations Explained
Disturbing Details
While The Golden Bachelorette season 1 was still airing, things were going great between Joan and Guy. It all seemed to blow up when People reported Guy’s ex-wife, Heidi O’Gara, filed a temporary protective order in October 2021. In the complaint, Guy’s ex accused him of having anger issues and making threats. Though Heidi dropped the order a month later, and it was never officially granted by a judge, I was convinced the scandal alone would stop Guy from being The Golden Bachelor.
Though the allegations are concerning, I think producers will consider his explanation before making any decisions about his future with the franchise.
When Guy’s protective order went public, he took to Instagram to address the disturbing allegations. The Golden Bachelorette season 1 contestant explained he and Heidi, who he was married to for 34 years and had four children with, struggled during their divorce. The split was contentious for a time, but the couple eventually agreed, prompting Heidi to drop the protective order. Though the allegations are concerning, I think producers will consider his explanation before making any decisions about his future with the franchise.
Signs Guy Could Be The Show’s Next Lead
He’s Been Posting More Often
Though I didn’t think Guy stood a chance at being cast as The Golden Bachelor, I’ve recently changed my mind. Though I thought other cast members from The Golden Bachelorette had a better shot, I’m not sure anymore. 58-year-old Mark Anderson is already in a committed relationship, so he’s off the market. 61-year-old Jonathan Rone just got out of a serious relationship, so it may be too soon for him to date dozens of women. I think Guy is the show’s best bet.
Guy was never very active on Instagram, but he recently broke his silence and has been posting regularly.
Part of what convinced me is that Guy has been more active on social media lately. Guy was never very active on Instagram but recently broke his silence and has been posting regularly. I read this as a sign he’s trying to up his presence before the new season is announced with him as the lead. Guy recently posted a clearly produced family vacation video on Instagram, where he looked the part. I found it quite interesting he included several Bachelor franchise hashtags as well.
Guy Certainly Looks The Part
He’s Golden Bachelor Ready
Several weeks ago, Guy posted an Instagram photo shoot that proves he looks the part of a Bachelor lead. In the footage, Guy poses for a photo shoot, and I think he looks better than ever. His caption reads, “I had fun time in a photoshoot with my talented niece, Kourtney Rose.” As great as The Golden Bachelor season 1 was, I think Guy is much more telegenic than Gerry was. Though his ex-wife accused him of heinous things, she may have been driven by anger and has since dropped the accusations.
I understand why the show’s producers would want to avoid any liability, but I hope they reconsider.
I think it would be unfair to punish him when his ex-wife has dropped the issue. To me, it seems like his wife’s brief protective order was filed in the heat of the moment during their contentious divorce. I understand why the show’s producers would want to avoid any liability, but I hope they reconsider. Guy seems like a great catch and a great person overall. Though I wasn’t on board at first, I’ve since changed my mind and hope ABC casts Guy as The Golden Bachelor.
