Dermot Mulroney’s new role as Chief Dom Pascal on NBC’s Chicago Fire is not just another acting gig for the seasoned star—it’s a return to a city filled with personal and professional memories.
During an appearance on the 3rd hour of TODAY on October 21, Mulroney, 60, discussed the excitement surrounding his character in Chicago Fire’s 13th season and his deep connection to the city of Chicago. Mulroney spent his college years at Northwestern University and filmed the iconic 1997 movie My Best Friend’s Wedding in the Windy City, so this new chapter in his career feels like a homecoming.
“Are you doing a memory tour?” TODAY host Al Roker asked Mulroney during the interview.
Mulroney shared that filming Chicago Fire has given him a unique opportunity to reunite with people from his past. “That’s the most amazing thing,” he said. “I’m running into people I worked with back then, and now I’m working with their kids.” He gave a heartwarming example: “Marissa, who does my hair, is the daughter of the set painter from My Best Friend’s Wedding.”
Mulroney famously starred alongside Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding, a romantic comedy that has maintained its cult status over the years. Reflecting on his time filming in Chicago, Mulroney shared that he couldn’t resist reminiscing with Roberts. “Of course, I right away took footage of the tour boat going under the bridge and sent that to my buddy Julia,” referencing a famous scene from the movie where their characters shared an emotional moment.
Beyond the nostalgia, Mulroney has also encountered more familiar faces on set. “Rick LeFevour, who was my stunt double back then, has now been replaced by his son, Rick Jr.,” he said, adding with a laugh, “I think that means I’ll never get old in Chicago. They keep me young—especially from behind, right?”
Joining the cast of Chicago Fire, now in its 13th season, Mulroney steps into big shoes following Eamonn Walker’s portrayal of Wallace Boden for 12 seasons. Walker’s character transitioned to a deputy district chief role in Season 10, and though Walker is no longer a series regular, his character is expected to make recurring appearances.
Mulroney expressed his gratitude for being part of such a successful and tightly-knit cast. “It’s amazing. First of all, it’s nice to have a steady job for once,” he joked. “Thank you, NBC, for that. What took so long?” He praised the show’s “well-run” production and revealed how physically demanding the role has been. “It’s an education every day and great to join such a popular series,” he said.
Mulroney’s return to Chicago for Chicago Fire has clearly been a special experience, blending old memories with new adventures. As fans welcome his character into the beloved One Chicago universe, Mulroney is relishing his opportunity to revisit the city that holds a special place in his heart.
