When Chicago Fire Season 12 concluded, fans saw Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) rise to a new role in the Chicago Fire Department, leaving a significant question hanging: who would succeed him as chief at Firehouse 51? While Boden tapped Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) as a potential candidate, Herrmann’s journey to leadership has been anything but straightforward. The arrival of Chief Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) in Season 13 and Herrmann’s missed captain’s test have created new challenges for the beloved firefighter.
Herrmann’s Captain Test: A Delayed Opportunity
In the Season 13 premiere, it’s revealed that Herrmann missed the captain’s test due to an untimely illness. Despite this setback, he’s determined to take the test at the next opportunity. However, Eigenberg admits Herrmann isn’t exactly prepared.
“He’s got a wife and kids, and he’s not the most focused guy,” Eigenberg explains. “When the chips are down, he delivers, but his self-confidence isn’t always his strong suit. He’s someone who knows what’s right but often needs guidance on how to get there. That’s what makes him such a compelling character to play.”
As Herrmann wrestles with self-doubt, the dynamic at Firehouse 51 grows more complex with Pascal’s leadership.
Getting to Know Chief Pascal
Pascal’s arrival as the new chief has shaken things up at Firehouse 51. Described as a rule-follower with an acerbic edge, Pascal initially seemed to clash with the firehouse’s tight-knit culture. However, Eigenberg reveals that Pascal’s character also possesses a surprising depth.
“Dermot [Mulroney] brings incredible passion to the role,” Eigenberg shares. “Pascal may come across as abrasive, but he genuinely cares about the team. It’s been interesting to explore whether Herrmann and the others will warm up to him.”
Eigenberg also praises Mulroney’s commitment to the show, recounting a heartwarming moment when Mulroney connected with a visiting fan who had developmental challenges. “Dermot was so moved by the experience; it shows how much he values being part of this team, both on and off-screen.”
The Future of Herrmann’s Leadership
As Herrmann eyes a future as captain—and perhaps even as chief—he’s grappling with what leadership at Firehouse 51 would mean for him personally.
“Herrmann loves the firehouse and doesn’t want to leave,” Eigenberg notes. “But if the time comes, he’ll carry the lessons he’s learned from Boden. Firehouse 51 is built on taking care of its people, even when it means bending the rules. That’s something Herrmann understands deeply.”
Boden may no longer be stationed at Firehouse 51, but Eigenberg teases that their bond remains strong. “I’ve heard we might see Boden return to advise Herrmann, but nothing’s been set in stone yet. I’d love to see more of their dynamic—it’s such an important relationship.”
The Herrmann-Cindy Dynamic
Herrmann’s relationship with his wife, Cindy (Robyn Coffin), remains one of the most beloved aspects of his character. Eigenberg has nothing but praise for Coffin and their on-screen chemistry.
“I adore working with Robyn,” he says. “Cindy is such a grounding force for Herrmann, even though she’s never afraid to call him out. Their relationship feels real, and it’s a joy to bring that to life.”
What Lies Ahead
As Chicago Fire continues its 13th season, Herrmann’s journey promises to be a mix of challenges and triumphs. Whether it’s preparing for his next shot at the captain’s test, navigating Pascal’s leadership, or balancing his responsibilities at home, Herrmann’s story is far from over.
“I think Herrmann will rise to the occasion when the time comes,” Eigenberg says. “He’s not perfect, but that’s what makes him so relatable. He cares deeply about his family, his team, and doing what’s right—and that’s the essence of Firehouse 51.”
