David Eigenberg has been a cornerstone of Chicago Fire since the series debuted in 2012, bringing to life the beloved character Christopher Herrmann over more than 200 episodes. Despite his long tenure on the show, rumors have been circulating about whether Eigenberg might be considering an exit.
These speculations gained traction during filming for the show’s tenth season, when Eigenberg was notably absent from the initial production in Chicago, instead tied up with another acting commitment in New York. While he eventually managed to balance both projects, fans were left wondering if this was a sign that his time at Firehouse 51 could be nearing its end.
Balancing Two Iconic Roles
Eigenberg’s absence from Chicago Fire wasn’t without reason. The actor had been cast in the reboot of Sex and the City, titled And Just Like That…, reprising his role as Steve Brady, Miranda’s husband. This dual commitment presented significant scheduling conflicts, with filming for the HBO Max series overlapping with his work on Chicago Fire.
However, Eigenberg was determined to make it work. In one instance, producers even considered chartering a private jet to fly him back to Chicago when scheduling became tight. Despite the challenges, the actor successfully managed to fulfill his obligations to both shows.
The Sex and the City reboot premiered in December, and while details about Eigenberg’s role in the new series remain under wraps, the actor has spoken fondly of his experience, particularly about working with his on-screen wife, Cynthia Nixon.
A Commitment to Chicago Fire
Despite his involvement in And Just Like That…, Eigenberg has made it clear that his heart remains with Chicago Fire. Speaking with Us Weekly, he expressed his deep connection to the show and its cast:
“My heart and my soul is here in Chicago, with the stories here and my colleagues.”
When the series celebrated its 200th episode in October, Eigenberg reflected on the bond he shares with his castmates, describing the show as a family:
“There was a family sensibility about this show because [the cast] really, in a ridiculous way, became friends that cared deeply about each other.”
A Career of Resilience
Eigenberg’s career has been marked by resilience and adaptability. Reflecting on his journey, he recalled the challenges he faced between his roles on Sex and the City and Chicago Fire:
“I had 15 years of really grinding it out with day jobs to get to decent employment. There were rough times, but I’m not averse to going through hard times. They come, and my wife and I, we’ve rolled through them.”
This tenacity has not only defined his career but also his personal life, as he has navigated the ups and downs of both with unwavering determination.
Will David Eigenberg Leave Chicago Fire?
While Eigenberg has had to juggle two major roles, there’s no definitive indication that he plans to leave Chicago Fire. His continued appearances and unwavering praise for the show suggest he’s committed to staying for the foreseeable future. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief—for now, at least—as it seems Herrmann will remain a fixture at Firehouse 51.
