David Boreanaz Reveals Why He’s Ready for SEAL Team to End After Seven Seasons
Many shows are ending or being canceled by 2024, and SEAL Team is on that list. The military drama, which CBS moved to Paramount+, is in the midst of its seventh and final season, with Bravo’s missions as intense as ever, both on the battlefield and off. While fans may want to see more of one of Paramount+’s best shows, star David Boreanaz is actually ready for the series to end, and he explains why.
Boreanaz, who plays Master Chief Jason Hayes, has previously opened up about the toll SEAL Team took on his body and his constant need for doctors. So it’s no surprise that the 55-year-old doesn’t want to continue performing high-intensity stunts and combat for the rest of his life. But beyond the physical and mental exhaustion, he told Collider that Jason and the rest of the team are in a good place for an ending: For me, you know, personally, before the writers’ strike happened, I expressed that this would be my last season on the show, regardless of whether the show continued or not. It was something that I decided I didn’t want to do because I knew that the character was well-rounded enough and being in a place where we were testing him and cutting corners and running teams from afar, that’s not his character. That’s definitely not what I want to do. I wouldn’t fit those shoes. I’m too adventurous and curious and too much of a leader of a macho character. I knew that was going to happen.
Even though fans wanted more SEAL Team, I agree with him. This is definitely the best outcome, regardless of how the show ends. Not many shows these days can end on their own terms, so I love that SEAL Team is getting a big break.
With Jason struggling more with his traumatic brain injury, Ray trying to focus more on the veterans center, and Davis dealing with his new job and a possible romance with Sonny, among other things, it certainly seems like the right time to wrap up Bravo’s story.
Just because it’s been decided that SEAL Team’s seventh season will be its last and Boreanaz is ready, though, doesn’t mean all of Bravo will have a happy ending. While it’s hard to predict what will happen in those final episodes, the Bones alum teased that fans might have mixed reactions to them. But after seven seasons, that’s really nothing new: And then the writers’ strike happened and months passed, and it became a mutual decision. I’m glad we were able to do the final season to nail this character and say, ‘Okay, this is how things should be for him.’ Honestly, I think the fans will either love it or think, ‘Why would you do that to this character?’ The ultimate sacrifice for a character like this is that you could get killed on the battlefield. That’s the realistic approach. That’s the authenticity of it. That’s how we’ve always shot the show, from day one. That possibility is there. It may or may not come to fruition, but I’m leaning toward the former.
The stakes are higher than ever because this is the final season, and this “ultimate sacrifice” makes that point clear. Fans are still mourning the loss of Clay Spenser, played by Max Thieriot, and Bravo is too, so killing off another member of the team would be terrible. Still, SEAL Team is unpredictable, and so is being out in the field in uncharted territory. So you never know what might happen.
At the very least, fans deserve some closure, even if it involves death. It seems like David Boreanaz has been thinking about how the show will end for a while. Plus, the series probably wouldn’t have decided to end after Season 7 if it wasn’t the right path.
