David Boreanaz Reflects on the Booth-Brennan Romance and the First Cover of ‘Bones’ for TV Guide Magazine
David Boreanaz has bounced from series to series, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Angel to Bones to SEAL Team. Ahead of the Paramount+ military drama’s final season, he stopped by the offices of TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine, and we asked him to take a look at the previous cover of Bones.
“It was the tie, the suit. You can’t see the arrogant belt buckle because it’s hidden there. But it’s still there. I miss the ties. That’s one of the things I really liked about Agent Booth and being able to incorporate a lot of specific, crazy, weird ties and different kinds of props that I had for him,” the actor who played FBI Agent Seeley Booth remarked, looking through the November 27–December 3, 2006, issue of TV Guide Magazine, which was published during the show’s second season. (The show ran for 12 seasons, from 2005 to 2017. The series’ 19th anniversary is September 13, 2005.)
When he saw the inside shoot—you can watch the video above for more—he recalled, “They wanted me to wear shoes, and I was like, ‘That’s not allowed. I’m wearing socks. It’s like a part of me.’ And they’re like, ‘Why are you wearing socks? Why do you have dice on your stomach? Why do you have cards and a pen and why do you have a belt buckle?’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s the character and that’s what makes the show so compelling in so many ways.'” The magazine article touches on everything from the cast members who have worked together to whether or not Booth and Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) have a relationship. When asked if they’d like to see the two get together, Boreanaz said, “I don’t think I’d be sleeping with her anytime soon,” while Deschanel said, “I think they belong together, but it’s more fun to watch us dance around our attractions. They have to figure out some things before they actually get together.”
Boreanaz laughs at that. “It sounds like Emily, talking forever,” he says. “I’m pretty straightforward. It’s definitely a personality thing. We both definitely talk about it forever.”
When it comes to that slow-burn romance, the key is “the dance,” Boreanaz says, “and watching them go there and not go there and see their own lives and what they’re trying to figure out is really the fun part. And then when we get to the kiss, we’ve jumped the shark and we’re able to continue that. And that’s something that’s a testament to the work and a testament to how we continue to work with [acting coach] Ivana [Chubbuck] and find those moments even when we’re together, which is even more exciting and spectacular and fun.” And that’s what we really tried to do, was, okay, the moment happened, now it’s gone, it’s dead. That’s it. No, we had problems in the morning eating breakfast or taking care of the girl. How do we do that? And that’s the humor in the bedroom. We love doing that.”
