Confused by the Yellowstone Universe? Here’s the Perfect Watch Order

Yellowstone fans, it’s not time to hang your hat up just yet. Although the namesake TV show and prequels, 1883 and 1923, have come to an end, it doesn’t mean the franchise is over. In fact, there’s a lot yet to come! With new stories from different Dutton eras coming down the pipeline, we figured we’d try to make things easier by laying out how to watch every Yellowstone spinoff in order because it’s not as straightforward as it may seem. Some stories overlap, others run simultaneously, covering different siblings in new states — it can be a lot of Dutton all at once.

To enjoy the Yellowstone Ranch storyline from its inception to future, here’s the order we’d recommend watching in.

‘1883’ (2021-2022)

This is a 10-episode miniseries, created in 2021 as a prequel to Yellowstone. It’s available to stream on Paramount+. Notable cast members include Sam Elliott and Faith Hill, alongside Tim McGraw.

Spinoff Series to Come

The Yellowstone universe doesn’t stop with two prequels. In fact, the franchise has four more confirmed series on the docket, with mutterings of several more unconfirmed shows in the mix, one of which potentially includes Matthew McConaughey.

  • Dutton Ranch (2025) — Set to premiere sometime this year, Dutton Ranch, which is a tentative title, follows Beth Dutton and her husband Rip Wheeler as they grow their own legacy in the ranching world. There aren’t many other details, but it should pick up where the original series left off.
  • The Madison (2025) — Formerly known as 2024 when the series was first pitched, The Madison is set to follow a new family, the Clyburns, who are relocating from New York to rural Montana. The show will take place after Yellowstone in a post-John Dutton Governor era. The series is expected to premiere in 2025, although a specific date has not been announced. It should be watched after Yellowstone in chronology.
  • Y: Marshals (2026) — This spinoff series is said to center around Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the youngest of John’s sons, as he leaves the ranch to become a U.S. Marshal while still dealing with familial ties. The series is expected to premiere in spring 2026 and take place after Yellowstone in chronology.
  • 1944 (2026) — Following suit with the other date-specific prequels, 1944 is expected to follow the Dutton family during the era of World War II. Cast members have not been announced, though the TV series is expected to premiere in late 2026. This storyline would fall between 1923 and Yellowstone in chronology.
  • 6666 (TBD) — Pronounced “Four Sixes,” this series is anticipated to follow Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White), a former Yellowstone ranch hand who was sent to 6666 to learn how to become a cowboy. While greenlit, the series has yet to announce a premiere date. It would follow Yellowstone in chronological order.
