How Young Sheldon tackles real-world issues through Paige Swanson’s story

Paige, as bright as Sheldon, often challenges him intellectually, sparking jealousy and frustration in him. Unlike Sheldon, Paige is portrayed as more fun-loving and socially adept.

However, the character sees a downward spiral in Season 3 after her parents’ divorce. In her appearance in Season 3, Paige spends a weekend with Sheldon (Iain Armitage) and Missy after her parents split, revealing how deeply the separation has affected her.

The once-sweet and high-achieving Paige begins to spiral, becoming rebellious, struggling academically, and finding it increasingly difficult to connect with her peers. She later confides in Sheldon about the emotional devastation her parents’ divorce has caused.

However, despite opening up, Paige continues to face challenges. She ultimately drops out of college, attends parties, and engages in underage drinking, further highlighting her ongoing struggles.

Her last appearance in Season 6’s A Stolen Truck and Going on the Lam, features her and Missy being pulled over after taking George’s truck.

The episode also shows Paige’s mother, Linda, refusing to acknowledge how her divorce might have impacted her daughter while suggesting that George and Mary should separate.

Paige’s story in The Big Bang Theory spin-off, created by Chuck Lorre, explores the profound effects a family breakdown can have on children. It portrays how the impact of the divorce leads to a loss of stability for the children involved, often causing them to grapple with identity and difficulty adjusting to their new life.

The showrunner addressed why Paige did not appear in the Young Sheldon final season

The Young Sheldon showrunner and executive producer, Steve Holland, addressed fans’ questions about Paige Swanson’s absence from The Big Bang Theory and the final season of its spin-off.

Fans have been curious why such a significant character in Sheldon’s life is never mentioned in The Big Bang Theory, especially given her role in Young Sheldon. Holland suggested in an interview with TV Line that Paige Swanson did not appear in the final season due to Mckenna Grace’s busy schedule.

“The downside of Mckenna being incredible is that Mckenna is a movie star,” he said before adding, “and that makes Mckenna very difficult to get.” The actress is known for her appearances in films like I, Tonya, Captain Marvel and most recently reprised her role as Phoebe Spengler in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

He also addressed fan theories about why Paige was never mentioned in The Big Bang Theory. Holland suggested that though she mirrored Sheldon in many ways, she had a closer bond with Missy than Sheldon by her last appearance.

“[By Season 6] she is not a huge part of Sheldon’s life; she’s more of Missy’s friend in the show than she is Sheldon’s friend,” he said, noting that Paige’s character allowed them to explore an alternate of how Sheldon could have turned out. He also suggested that the character had already gotten the much-needed closing arc in her final appearance in Season 6.
