The scene was scripted to occur after Ana leaves Christian briefly, questioning whether their relationship is built on love or control. Alone in his penthouse, Christian spirals. He’s not just sad — he’s unraveling.
Originally, director James Foley wanted to explore the full psychological collapse of Christian. For once, viewers would see the billionaire stripped of charm, wealth, and control. It was meant to be a moment of complete vulnerability.
The setting: Christian’s childhood bedroom, recreated in chilling detail. His adoptive mother, Grace, was supposed to find him there — on the floor, clutching an old photograph of his birth mother, shaking, muttering apologies to no one.
But during filming, something happened that no one expected.
Jamie Dornan was reportedly deeply invested in the emotional arc of the scene.
