Chris O’Donnell Reveals Scrapped Plan to Rescue Hetty in NCIS: LA, Talks New Role in 9-1-1: Nashville

While Chris O’Donnell is gearing up for his next chapter as the lead in ABC’s 9-1-1: Nashville, he’s still very much aware of what’s happening in the world of NCIS: Los Angeles. Speaking with TVLine during Disney’s recent Upfront presentation, O’Donnell reacted to some major updates about his longtime character, Special Agent G. Callen—including the surprising news that Callen is now expecting a baby with wife Anna.

O’Donnell was caught off guard by the development, but seemed pleased that Callen’s story is continuing, even off-screen. He also discussed the lingering mystery surrounding fan-favorite character Hetty Lange, who was absent for much of NCIS: LA’s final season. As revealed in LL Cool J’s recent NCIS guest appearance, Hetty was last seen on the wrong side of a DMZ—leaving fans desperate for closure.

According to O’Donnell, there was a plan to bring Hetty’s story full circle. He revealed that during the dual Hollywood strikes that followed the series’ May 2023 finale, he and others had pitched a NCIS: LA TV movie centered around rescuing Hetty. Unfortunately, the idea never made it past early talks.

As he closes the door on that chapter, O’Donnell is embracing a new one. In 9-1-1: Nashville, premiering this fall Thursdays at 9/8c, he stars as Don Sharpe—a rugged fire captain, devoted family man, and former rodeo rider running Nashville’s busiest firehouse alongside his beloved son. While Don is strong and dependable, the official description hints he’s also carrying secrets of his own.

Though NCIS: LA fans may never get that Hetty rescue mission, O’Donnell’s next act promises new drama, high stakes—and maybe a few more secrets worth uncovering.
