Chicago Fire’s Jake Lockett on Carver’s spiral, his job security in doubt, and his future with Violet Sam Carver is on thin ice at Firehouse 51. Last week’s Chicago Fire saw the firefighter make a series of mistakes on the job, prompting Lieutenant Stella Kidd to send him home with a warning. But Carver’s bad-news girlfriend Tori sees his situation differently: Why continue to be undervalued at 51 when there are several fire departments in Austin that would be happy to have him, she suggests. So is Carver seriously considering leaving the Windy City?
“I think this is a crossroads for him,” the Jake Lockett actor told TVLine ahead of Wednesday’s episode (NBC, 9/8c). “What is he going to do? Is he going to stay true to this group of people who might see him as the best person he could be, even if he isn’t that person right now? Or is he going to take the comfortable path? I think that’s really the question. Sometimes we make one decision over another, and you have to deal with the consequences of that.”

I’m impressed. You’re an aerospace engineer? How did you transition from that to acting?
Yeah, I guess, technically, I was. I definitely don’t practice anymore. That transition was interesting. I worked for Boeing for a few years, and I guess when you’re in a small room with no windows, I realized I don’t want to do this anymore. This is not how I want to spend the next 40 years of my life. So I turned to performing, and I did a little acting in high school, so I started doing music, and then that led to some student drama [and] film auditions, and the next thing you know, here you are.
When he was cast in Chicago Fire, his first thought was I was like, “That’s the Capital One guy!” I recognized him from those commercials because they’re everywhere. They’re on TV all the time.
[Laughs] Yeah. That’s a great commercial. That’s a fun commercial. It’s still airing, but with someone else who shot it at the same time as me. It’s also a really fun commercial, because we shot it on the same screens in Manhattan Beach that they shot The Mandalorian on. These circular LED screens with ceilings and everything, so you’re kind of in the middle of that world, except these screens that are all around, like 20 feet high.
Congratulations on being promoted to main cast this season. When we broke that news, I felt like I was overdue.
Thank you. I’m so excited. This is a group of people who, really, from the beginning, accepted me as I am, and it’s great to have it reflected in the same way. I think Carver has had a great and important role in the fire department, so, hey, let’s move on. I’m having fun.
It’s interesting to look back at Carver and what he was like when he was first introduced as Stella’s antagonist versus what he is now. What do you like about his evolution? And what’s it like playing Carver this season when he’s become a lot darker and more moody?
Oh, I know. A lot of people see him as being teased. At first, when he first came in, I just felt like he was someone who was willing to say, “No, that’s none of your business. You don’t know me like that,” and I think for him, that’s the safest place, or that’s the safest place. So to see him grow from that person to someone who reaches out and becomes part of the family and leans on the family at certain times, it’s been a really great experience. I think that’s something that people face in real life, like, “Hey, I don’t know who you are yet.
