Chicago Fire’s David Eigenberg Previews Herrmann’s Captain Test — Will He Replace Chief Pascal?
The big test day is coming up for Chicago Fire’s Herrmann.
In this Wednesday’s finale (airing at 9/8c on NBC), the firefighter prepares to take the test to become captain — and this time, he won’t be giving up.
“He’s going in and he’s not going to be alone because we have Mouch who’s preparing for another big change in his life” as he takes the lieutenant test, David Eigenberg, who plays Herrmann, tells TVLine.
If Herrmann passes and eventually becomes captain of Firehouse 51, as Boden (former series regular Eamonn Walker) has told him he hopes he will one day, then the move to a real leadership position will take Herrmann away from the action.
“When you move up the ladder as an officer, you’re away from the actual fire, but you’re also responsible for people’s lives,” Eigenberg notes. “It’s hard to worry about being responsible for people and also moving away from your old life. And I think Hermann is ready, and we’ll see how that goes moving forward.”
Unfortunately, at this point, Boden isn’t back to help Herrmann with the next phase of his career, Eigenberg says. Instead, the firefighter is turning to his friend Mouch as the two go through the process together. But could Herrmann make the move at 51? Currently, Dermot Mulroney’s fire chief Dom Pascal is taking over Boden’s old role at the fire department, and Eigenberg doesn’t want to replace him.
“Dermot is a great addition. I’m very confused,” the actor says. “To be honest, I don’t know what they’re going to do, and I can tell you I don’t want him to go.”
“And then I feel weirdly guilty about Eamonn,” Eigenberg added. “I’m very close to Eamonn. He came back from London for a few days, and he stayed with us… I love that man, and I love that character. And then sometimes, when I say I really like Dermot, I feel weird.”
