Chicago Fire’s David Eigenberg: From Marine to Beloved TV Firefighter

NBC’s Chicago Fire, now in its 10th season, has become a staple in the “One Chicago” universe alongside Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. Created by Dick Wolf, the series delves into the lives of first responders at the fictional Firehouse 51. Known for its realism, the show employs an ex-firefighter as a technical advisor and even uses real fires, rather than CGI, to enhance authenticity.

One of the show’s most beloved characters is Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann, played by David Eigenberg. But what many fans might not know is that Eigenberg, who joined the show in its first season and remains a central character, is a former Marine. His real-life military background has helped him bring a deep sense of respect and accuracy to his role.

Before portraying Herrmann, Eigenberg served in the Marine Corps, and his connection to service remains strong. He’s actively involved with the United Service Organizations (USO), which provides support and entertainment to U.S. Armed Forces members. It was through the USO that he met his wife, also a former service member, following the events of 9/11.

In 2019, during a USO tour at the Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois, Eigenberg made it a point to express gratitude to the local fire department. Reflecting on his experience, he shared that the sense of duty shared between firefighters and military personnel resonates deeply with him.

Eigenberg’s military background not only enhances his portrayal of Herrmann but also contributes to the authentic atmosphere on Chicago Fire, making him a unique and cherished member of the cast.
