Chicago Fire Showrunner Hints at Brett & Casey’s Future—Are They Really Gone?

It’s been nearly a year since Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) bid farewell to Firehouse 51 and started their new life together in Oregon. The couple’s emotional departure in Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 6 (“Port in the Storm”) saw them tie the knot before heading west to begin their journey as a family. Since then, fans have heard little about them—until now.

According to showrunner Andrea Newman, even though the couple is no longer in Chicago, their presence is still felt on the show. “It’s so funny because we never think of these characters as gone,” Newman told TV Line, reassuring fans that Brett and Casey are still very much a part of the Chicago Fire universe. While there are no immediate plans for their return, Newman promised they won’t be forgotten, teasing that their names will continue to come up in future episodes.

In fact, a recent mention of Casey’s leadership style influencing Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) in Season 13, Episode 12 proves that their legacy at Firehouse 51 remains strong.

Could Kara Killmer and Jesse Spencer Return?

With less than a year since her exit, it might still be too early for Kara Killmer to make a full-fledged return. However, the actress has made it clear that she’s open to the possibility.

“If the door’s open for them, the door’s open for me!” Killmer told TV Line before her final episode aired. “I would be more than happy to pop in anytime. You know, 51 has a unique way of getting itself into trouble, and we love to see familiar faces.”

That said, Killmer is currently focused on exploring new opportunities, mentioning she has been auditioning for different projects. “I’m really excited to see what new projects come down the pipeline,” she said. “I’ve more than enjoyed my 10 years on Fire, but I’m also really excited to see what else is out there.”

As for Jesse Spencer, his return may be more likely—especially for special storylines. The actor has already come back multiple times since his departure in Episode 200, most recently for Brett and Casey’s wedding.

“When I left the show, I talked to Derek [Haas] and everybody and said, ‘Listen, if it makes sense to bring me in for a storyline that you think would be appropriate for Casey, I’m happy to pop in for an episode,’” Spencer revealed in an interview.

With that in mind, could another Brettsey appearance be in the works? While nothing is confirmed, the Chicago Fire team has made it clear that they haven’t closed the door on these fan-favorite characters.

For now, viewers can still relive Brett and Casey’s love story by streaming all episodes of Chicago Fire on Peacock—and keeping an eye out for future updates on their possible return!
