Big changes are on the horizon for Chicago Fire in Season 14 — and they may not all be welcome. Firehouse 51 could be facing serious restructuring as looming department-wide budget cuts threaten the current lineup.
Throughout Season 13, Chicago Fire hinted at turbulent times ahead when a fire department auditor revealed plans for potential budget reductions. These proposed cuts could lead to forced retirements or job reassignments — and Firehouse 51 is in the crosshairs.
One of the most vulnerable team members is Christopher Herrmann. At the end of last season, Herrmann made the selfless choice to step down from his officer position so that Mouch could be promoted to Lieutenant of Engine 81. While this decision was made with the best intentions, it’s left Herrmann in a lower-ranking role that may make him more susceptible to being pushed out in favor of younger, lower-salaried personnel. His reduced pay might offer some protection, but nothing is guaranteed.
Even those in higher positions aren’t safe. Chief Dom Pascal, who’s currently serving as Battalion Chief, could find his role in jeopardy. As Season 13 wrapped, Pascal was still under suspicion in an arson and attempted murder case — an unresolved issue that could resurface in Season 14. According to showrunner Andrea Newman, the ripple effects of the department’s financial strain could very well reach him.
With cast exits already confirmed and a sense of uncertainty hanging over Firehouse 51, Season 14 is shaping up to be a transitional chapter for the long-running series. And as Newman has hinted — we should brace for goodbyes.
